Christmas – More Than Jingle Bell by Pastor Amos Dada PhD; P.Eng

Christmas is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated and celebrated seasons worldwide. Streets are adorned with twinkling lights, homes echo with the sound of carols, and the familiar jingle of sleigh bells fills the air. While the festive traditions of Christmas bring joy and warmth, the essence and purpose of this special season go far beyond the jingles and glittering decorations. Christmas is a profound celebration of hope, love, and redemption—a divine intervention that changed the course of history.

The Essence of Christmas

At its heart, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Over 2,000 years ago, in the humble town of Bethlehem, the Son of God was born in a manger, fulfilling ancient prophecies and bringing hope to humanity. The Bible records this pivotal event in Luke 2:11: *"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord." *

The essence of Christmas lies in the recognition of this divine gift. God, in His infinite love, sent His only begotten Son to dwell among us, to bridge the gap between divinity and humanity. This act of grace underscores the message of Christmas: Emmanuel—God with us.

The Purpose of Christmas

1. A Time for Reflection

Christmas provides an opportunity to reflect on God’s love and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It reminds us of the humility of His birth and His ultimate mission to bring salvation to the world. This reflection calls us to examine our relationship with God and renew our commitment to living according to His purpose.

2. A Celebration of Love

Christmas is a celebration of the greatest love ever shown. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." This season invites us to embody this love by showing kindness, compassion, and generosity to others, especially the less privileged.

3. A Message of Hope

The birth of Jesus signifies hope for humanity. In a world often overshadowed by challenges, Christmas reminds us that God’s light shines even in the darkest times. It is a beacon of assurance that God’s promises never fail.

4. A Call to Reconciliation

The story of Christmas is also a call to peace and reconciliation. Jesus came to reconcile humanity to God and to one another. As we celebrate, we are encouraged to mend broken relationships, forgive offenses, and extend the hand of peace.

Christmas Beyond the Celebrations

While traditions like exchanging gifts, decorating trees, and enjoying festive meals add color to the season, they should not overshadow its deeper meaning. Christmas is more than just a holiday; it is a holy day. It is an opportunity to realign our priorities and focus on what truly matters: our relationship with God and how we live out His love.

Practical ways to honor the essence of Christmas include:

  • Giving Generously: Share your resources with those in need, embodying the sacrificial love of Christ.

  • Spreading Joy: Be a source of encouragement and joy to others, reflecting the joy that Christ’s birth brings.

  • Strengthening Faith: Spend time in prayer, worship, and studying the Bible to deepen your understanding of God’s gift.

  • Fostering Unity: Use this season to strengthen family bonds and build meaningful connections with others.

Conclusion

Christmas is indeed more than jingles and bells. It is a celebration of God’s immense love and the hope He brought into the world through Jesus Christ. As we embrace the festivities, let us not lose sight of its true essence and purpose. May this Christmas season inspire us to live in love, hope, and gratitude, embodying the message of peace and goodwill that the Savior’s birth heralds. Let us make Christmas a time of reflection, transformation, and a renewed commitment to walking in the light of Christ. Truly, this is what makes Christmas a season to cherish and celebrate.
