Women who shave their V@.g!nas thinking it is more hygienic are actually putting themselves at greater risk of infection, according to experts.
Not only does the hair stop viruses and bacteria reaching genitalia, it also acts as a cushion for the sensitive labia and V@.g!na.
Dr Vanessa Mackay, from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, told The Independent :
“PUBIC HAIR OFFERS A NATURAL BARRIER TO KEEP THINGS CLEAN, TO DECREASE CONTACT WITH VIRUSES AND BACTERIA, AND TO PROTECT THE TENDER SKIN OF THE AREA.
“WHILE PROTECTING AGAINST DISEASES AND SKIN PROBLEMS, PUBIC HAIR PREVENTS FOREIGN PARTICLES LIKE DUST AND PATHOGENIC BACTERIA FROM ENTERING THE BODY.PUBIC HAIR ALSO HELPS TO CONTROL THE MOISTURE OF THE AREA WHICH DECREASES THE CHANCES OF YEAST INFECTIONS.”
The study by JAMA Dermatology also found that women not only groom for ‘social events’ but also break out the razor when visiting a health care professional because they are “self-conscious about their appearance even in nonsocial settings”.
The most common reasons for grooming were hygiene (59% of women sureyed), because they believe it makes their g enitals more attractive (31.5%), and because their partner prefers it (21.1%).
Mayowa Ahmed, the cancer patient who was the beneficiary of the #SaveMayowa fundraising campaign, has died.
Habeeb Odufuye, her cousin, shared the news of her demise on Sunday, through his Twitter page, @Asiwaju_Foye.
“By Allah, in who’s hands our lives is, Mayowa Ahmed has left us in this world. We pray that Jannat becomes her home. She tried, we tried but God’s will prevailed”, he said in two tweets.
Mayowa’s condition — stage 4 ovarian cancer — prompted Nigerians to rally and pool funds to facilitate her treatment abroad however, the entire process, although successful, ended in controversy.
It was recently revealed in a statement issued by her family that Mayowa had finally travelled to South Africa for treatment.
Mayowa’s family had said: “As a family, it was our wish for Mayowa to leave the country on the earliest available flight to start her treatment but due to the much rumoured and alleged scam, we were faced with an overwhelming task of getting her flight documentations ready and missed the earliest scheduled appointment for August 1 in the UAE.
“In the midst of all this, several people and organisations working with us became sceptical and had to cancel appointments, including health care providers.
“But for some well-meaning individuals who were not deterred assisted in activating our back up plan. And with the grace of the Almighty Allah, Mayowa finally left the shores of Nigeria to South Africa last Thursday to start her treatment.
“On behalf of Mayowa, we want to say a very big thank you to everybody for your support with donations, prayers and logistics to facilitate the pursuit of giving Mayowa Ahmed a chance to live.
“To our various employers, we are extremely grateful for the trust and faith you had in us amidst of the allegations. Also the Lagos state police command for their diligent and thorough investigation which reinforced the integrity that the family stands for and was raised by.”

Troops of 3 Division, Sector 5 and 27 Task Force Brigade of Nigerian Army arrested a Boko Haram commander who doubles as an engineer at Gishiwa Dabua and Garejin Audu areas of Potiskum in Yobe State in the early hours of Thursday.
Other arrested suspects include Ibrahim Jagwal (38) and Audu Ahmadu a.k.a. Condemned (45), who specialises in repairs of automobiles for the terrorist group.
Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, disclosed this yesterday in a statement issued to newsmen in Maiduguri.
The statement reads in part: “The suspected terrorist who turned out to be the Ameer (commander) of the Boko Haram Terrorists at Tumbin Gini, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, also led the team to Garejin Audu in Potiskum, where another terror suspect, Audu Ahmadu, is a Boko Haram engineer who specializes in repairs of automobiles for the Boko Haram terrorist group.”
The vehicles, according to Usman, were recovered by the troops while the suspects were taken into custody for onward movement to Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC).
Usman further disclosed that troops of 29 and 156 Task Force Battalion and Brigade also carried out “clearance and rescue military operations” near Abalam and South West of Alagarno forest of Sambisa.
He said that when the troops engaged the terrorists, they fled, but the soldiers pursued them and recovered three bows and five packs of quivers stocked with 144 arrows.
The terrorists’ camp of Gemri village, he added, was destroyed, while the 47 rescued hostages were moved to Maiduguri Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp for screening and resettlement.
Explaining how 47 hostages were rescued, Usman said: “The troops pursued the fleeing terrorists and discovered that they left behind seven men, 13 women and 27 children that were held hostage at Gemri village in Sambisa Forest.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced the source of the $40million paid to Roberts Azibaola, who is former President Goodluck Jonathan’s cousin, to a bank in London.
The cash was wired through Citibank N. A. Canada Square Canary in Wharf London E 145 LB into the account of One Plus Holdings Nigeria Limited of Azibaola.
About $6million of the money was paid to a bureau de change in Abuja.
Azibaola, who was yet to make any refund, has been relocated from Lagos to Abuja in preparation for his trial.
Charges have been filed against the ex-President’s cousin at a Federal High Court in Abuja. No date has been fixed for his arraignment.
According to a document obtained by our correspondent, the $40million came from the account of the Special Services Office of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
“The Special Services Office has a joint account with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and some security agencies, which was managed by ONSA.
“The $40million was wired into the account of Azibaola’s company through Citibank N. A. Canada Square Canary in Wharf London E 145 LB.
“The money was transferred to One Plus Holdings Nigeria Limited with Robert Azibaola and Stella Azibaola as directors. All disbursements went to individuals and companies including two foreign firms and the wife of the ex-President’s cousin. About $5.5million has been allegedly transferred to Mrs. Azibaola.
“The $40mmillion was in respect of a contract for the supply of Tactical Communication Kits for Special Forces. No records of contract executed.
“We wrote to the Office of the SGF and the Permanent Secretary, Special Services Office (PSSO) said: “The SGF office is not in possession of any document or evidence of contract.
“Even the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) said it had no records of the contract but it only made available payment advice to transfer the funds to the Azibaola’s account.
A source close to the investigation said: “We have to release the outcome of investigations to show that the EFCC is not engaging in any witch-hunt against the cousin of the ex-President.
“Although the contract was for the supply of Tactical Communication kits, when we interrogated the cousin of the ex-President, he said ‘they had a discussion with the ex-NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), to secure pipelines in the Niger Delta but there is no evidence to show for it.
“If there was any contract, how come $6million was remitted into the account of a bureau de change? None of the suspects was able to explain the reason for this.
Responding to a question, the source added: “Robert Azibaola has not refunded the $40million or a part of it. He has been relocated from Lagos to Abuja in readiness for his arraignment in court. He has behaved well in detention.
The EFCC arrested Azibaola’s on March 23 – in line with the ongoing probe of 300 companies involved in phantom contracts by ONSA.
But counsel to the suspect, Gordy Uche (SAN) in a statement in Abuja accused the Commission of embarking on a vendetta mission against former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said the Federal Government was still owing his client $4million, being balance of the contract sum for “successfully securing oil pipelines which saw Nigeria reap billions of US dollars from increased oil production”.
He asked the commission to “either charge my clients to court or release them on bail”.
Uche said: “My client (Roberts) is being persecuted and punished because of his DNA, as a relative of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
“My client is innocent until proven guilty, according to the laws of Nigeria. So, his continuous detention is a breach of his fundamental human rights as a free citizen of Nigeria. The appropriate thing for the EFCC to do in this circumstance is to release him now or charge him to court.”

Popular Nigerian Pastor, Sunday Adelaja, is currently under fire to resign after allegations emerged that he's having extramarital relationships with 20 different women in his congregation.
Adelaja is founder of one of Europe’s largest churches, the Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God for All Nations Church in Kiev, Ukraine.
The Russian Union of Christians Evangelical Faith, in a statement on its website said Adelaja had confessed to having committed adultery with his female parishioners at a meeting of pastors and board of elders of the church. He had however repented, the statement said.
Also, a letter was posted on the website of the Spiritual Council Russian Union of Christians Evangelical Faith (Pentecostals), written by one Apostle Toff Ulissis, a clergyman who was said to be providing spiritual care to the Nigerian pastor. Adelaja was urged to “seek psychiatric help in Kiev and the United States.”
Ulissis said, “Pastor Sunday mentioned that he had a relationship with 20 or 30 women; probably, the number was more than he could remember. Also, I talked with many women (married and unmarried), as well as with their husbands, and they shared with me their pain and described how the pastor manipulates people, who work for him. All the stories were equally horrific, disgusting and depressing. People are very sorry about the current situation with the pastor and wanted him to have psychiatric help.
“I made it clear that my aim is not to destroy either the Embassy of God, because many people have found help in the church or Pastor Sunday as a person. I wanted to make sure that everything has been done to these women and the couples have received care, reconciliation and redeeming restoration.”
In addition to this, Anatoly Belonozhko, a bishop in Adelaja’s church has resigned, saying the embattled pastor was not willing to seek help.
Adelaja has however denied all allegations levelled against him, saying it is an attempt by some people to take over the church from him.
“That is not true at all; I have read what people are saying about me. The funny thing is that nobody asked me for any information; no interview was granted to anyone,” he said according to Punch.
FORMER aviation minister Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has had his passport seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday after he admitted that he received N840m the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) during the last election campaign.
Chief Fani-Kayode served as director of publicity of the Goodluck Jonathan Presidential Election Campaign in 2015 and received state funding to run it. On Monday, Chief Fani-Kayode was arrested by the EFCC and during interrogation, he admitted accepting the cash to run the campaign.
However, he said her was unaware of the fact that the money emanated from the account of the CBN and was assured by the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party that the cash was sourced from private individuals. Jude Ndukwe, Chief Fani-Kayode's spokesman, confirmed that the ex-minister had submitted his passport to the EFCC, adding that the agency had given him bail conditions but had refused to release his patron despite meeting the conditions.
Mr Ndukwe added: “The EFCC gave him two bail conditions. The first condition was that he would hand over his passport while the second condition was for him to provide two sureties.
"The two sureties must be at least directors in the civil service and must have properties in the Abuja Municipal Area Council. Five days after meeting the conditions, the EFCC has refused to release him.”
In a related development, the EFCC has arrested a former principal private secretary, to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Alhaji Hassan Tukur. Alhaji Tukur had been on the radar of the EFCC for several months over the alleged $15bn arms scam.
He was said to have been given money to help negotiate a peace deal with Boko Haram during the Jonathan administration. Also, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Ramalan Yero, has been a guest of the EFCC for the last 48 hours where he is being quizzed for allegedly receiving N700m.
According to the EFCC, Alhaji Yero was being investigated for his alleged role in the $115m shared by a former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. The money, which was handled by Fidelity Bank, was said to have been used in bribing several officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.
