Following the emergence of Rtd. Gen. Muhammodu Buhari as the president-elect of Nigeria, corrupt politicians in the country are taking every measures to ensure that they are not found guilty, when the president -elect resumes office in May 29, 2015.

In a bid to check-mate corruption in the affairs of the country, the World Bank has thrown its weight behind President-elect, Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari(retd.), to probe the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation over allegations of missing funds.

Speaking during a video conferencing from Washington to journalists from across Africa on the release of the bank’s analysis of issues shaping Africa titled ‘Africa’s Pulse’, top officials of the bank also lauded President Goodluck Jonathan for exhibiting political maturity after his defeat in the recent presidential election.

Answering questions from journalists, World Bank’s Chief Economist for Africa, Mr. Francisco Ferreira, said looking into financial record of the country, especially into allegation of corruption at the NNPC, would check impunity and build public institutions in the future.

He said, “One norm that has to change is the norm of impunity. I am from Brazil myself. So, I am also used to a country where people could be corrupt and escape justice. That keeps the people to keep doing it.

“So the current stand of the government-elect to look into what happened in the past hopefully will have consequences for the future. And those consequences will be that institutions will be stronger; norms will be cleaner and people will not have to steal millions of dollars from Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

“People have alleged in the past that there had been major corruption scandals there. If that stops, then that will have very high returns in terms of the money staying around to be spent on education, health, roads and power that the poor people in Nigeria across the country need.

“So my sense is that it will be good to promote cleanliness in politics.”

It would be recalled that controversial Nigeria’s Petroleum Minister, Mrs Diezani Alison Madueke for fear of Buhari, fled the country to the United Kingdom, from where she might escape to a safe haven.

The controversial minister was reported to had feigned sickness and actually pretended to be seriously sick while going through immigration at the airport departure lounge over fears that she might be stopped from fleeing the country.

According to a credible source in the presidential villa, Diezani who has a plethora of corruption allegations against her left the country through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja aboard a British Airways flight.

Nigerians are waiting to see Mrs Alison-Madueke account for the $20 billion former CBN governor and now Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has continued to insist was diverted from the federation account by the Minister and her cronies in NNPC.

Apart from this, a group of whistleblowers against corruption has accused Diezani Alison-Madueke, of squandering millions of dollars of public funds to rent private jets for the conduct of her official activities. In a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the group, known as Crusader for Good Governance, demanded that Ms. Allison-Madueke be investigated for her habit of spending extravagant sums to rent private jets for her official hops.

Mrs. Alison-Madueke has frequently traveled around the world in private jets since becoming a minister, first under the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and later under President Goodluck Jonathan. In addition, she often moves members of her family in private jets.
