DIASPORANS in the United Kingdom have elected a new set of leaders to run their umbrella organisation the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (Canuk) for the next two years following the expiration of the current executive's tenure.

Canuk's current executive led by its chairman Chief Bimbo Afolayan, will bow out at its annual general meeting (AGM) taking place on Saturday April 11. At the AGM a new chairman will be elected and there are currently three contestants gunning for the top job but voting into the other positions has been completed.

Yesterday, the electoral committee released the results of the postal and online ballot for the other positions showing Alex Achebe was elected as first vice chairman with Charles Sylvester elected as second vice chairman. Dr Olugbenga Coker has been elected general secretary, Ronke Adeagbo has been elected treasurer, while Theodora Ibekwe-Oyebade has been elected assistant publicity secretary and Agatha Anyiwo has been elected assistant welfare treasurer.

Once the elections are completed this Saturday with a new chairman on board, the new executive will be sworn-in.

The three contenders for the chairmanship are Ronke Udofia, Dr Boma Douglas and Babatunde Loye.  One of them will be elected on Saturday to complete the executive that will take over after the AGM.

Chief Afolayan said: "Elections to the position of chairperson takes place this Saturday, so all delegates are encouraged to come and vote for their candidate. Please join me in congratulating the people who will selflessly lead our community for the next two years."

This executive will run until 2017 with elected officials only allowed to serve two two-year terms. After the AGM at the Nigerian high commission in central on Saturday, the executive will be sworn-in.
