RAPE: Man in court for allegedly attempting to rape friend’s wife

 40-year-old man was on Thursday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for attempting to rape his friend’s wife.

Atoku Odimegwu who resides at 40, Ladejo Street, Ojodu Berger in Lagos state, is facing a one-count charge of attempted rape.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Rachel Williams, the incident happened on June 30 when the woman, 37, went to the residence of the accused to collect money he owed her husband.

The prosecutor revealed that on getting to the house, the accused locked the door and told the woman that he wanted to make love to her. The woman refused his advances and begged him to let her go but the man was adamant as he pushed her to the ground and attempted to rape her.

Although the accused succeeded in tearing the underwear of the victim, the rape attempt was unsuccessful as she overpowered him.

Insp. Williams said that the offence was a violation of Section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, adjourned the case to August 19 for trial after granting him bail in sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate also ordered Odimegwu to pay N50, 000 into the account of the Chief Registrar as part of the bail conditions.
