The new president of the Philippines, has urged ordinary citizens to take the law into their own hands and kill drug dealers who resist arrest.
On Saturday, 71-year-old Rodrigo Duterte gave a speech in Davao, where called on citizens to use their guns to get rid of drug dealers who refuse to hand themselves over to police.
The crowd cheered as Duterte promised to reward citizens who fight crime. The president said that drastic action is needed since high-ranking police officials are involved in the drug trade.
If a drug dealer resists arrest or refuses to be taken to a police station, he can be killed, the president said. He also promised to give the shooter a medal for his service.
Human rights activists have voiced their concern about the rhetoric of the president, saying that the fight against crime can lead to widespread violations of human rights.
Duterte demanded the resignation of three police officials because of their involvement in organized crime. He threatened to humiliate them in public if they do not quit.
Duterte concluded his speech by saying: "If you are still into drugs, I will kill you. Do not take this as a joke. I'm not trying to make people laugh. I will really kill you."
