THE 2016 NISSAN ROGUE: A COMBINATION OF FUEL EFFICIENCY, SAFETY, COMFORT AND TECHNOLOGY

The Nissan Rogue is a midsize crossover SUV that falls in the same segment with Honda CRV, Toyota RAV 4, Mazda CX-5, Ford Escape, VW Tiguan and GMC Terrain. It was initially produced in Japan in 2008, and sold in North America with astounding success. With additional production plant in Smyrna, Tennessee in the United States (North Americas largest Auto Manufacturing Facility) the ROGUE became more popular with the advent of the all-new 2014 and subsequent models which gave it the accolade of one of the best selling SUVs in its segment.

Designed with a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine, the 2016 Nissan Rogue stands out as a very fuel efficient vehicle with a gas consumption rate of 9.1 liters per 100kms within the city and 7.1 liters per 100kms (approximately 900kms on a tank)  on the highway for the Front Wheel Drive (FWD). The All-Wheel Drive (AWD) maintains a gas consumption rate of 9.5 liters per 100kms within the city and 7.4 liters per 100kms on the highway. To further boost its fuel efficiency, the Rogue is configured with an “Eco Mode” switch mounted on the dash board. When pushed, it automatically adjusts the fuel consumption rate. Added to this is the Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) which also maximizes fuel efficiency with its seamless transition from one shift to another. In essence, there is no “shift shock” as in conventional automatic or manual transmissions. Of particular note is the “Pure Drive” Signature which distinguishes the ROGUE as an environmentally friendly vehicle with lower emissions. As opposed to some vehicles that use premium gas, the ROGUE uses regular unleaded gas which of course is less expensive.

The aerodynamic design of the vehicle also contributes to its excellent fuel efficiency. It allows it to move through the air quickly with a coefficient of drag of just 0.33. In essence, the shape of the vehicle allows it to cut through the air with little resistance, and, in turn, lets the engine do the job of taking you to where you need to go.

To own a vehicle is one thing and to be protected in the event of an accident while driving is another. The ROGUE comes with some amazing safety features that are difficult to resist. These features are referred to as the Rogue’s “SAFETY SHIELD”. The driver and passenger side impact and curtain Air Bags are designed with roll over sensors that activate them in case of a rollover or accident.

Other safety features in the ROGUE include the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS); Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control and Tire Pressure Monitoring System.  The Vehicle Dynamic Control automatically detects a wheel that is not rotating or functioning well, and then pushes it to rotate and consequently increasing the ability of the vehicle to turn while braking. The Vehicle Stability Control reduces the engine power or applies select brakes to help prevent the driver from losing control of the vehicle while in motion.

As part of the vehicle stability requirements, the four tires of the vehicle remain as the only points of contact of the vehicle with the road. When the tire pressure is not normal, it affects the vehicle stability and fuel efficiency. To minimize this, the NISSAN Rogue comes with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that displays the pressure in each tire. When it is below normal, it starts flashing. This is referred to as “easy fill”.

The Rear View Camera is a standard feature on the Rogue. This enables drivers to see objects behind them while backing up. Other features include the Electronic Brake Force Distribution. Moving up to the higher models like the SV Tech and SL Premium packages, the ROGUE comes with Around View Monitor which allows the driver to see objects around the vehicle. It is a 360 degree coverage of the surrounding area of the vehicle. Added to this are the Blind Spot, and Moving Object Detection warnings.  Alongside these features is the Intelligent Key System which allows you to unlock the vehicle with a touch of the button on the front door handle. Syncronized with this is the Push Button Ignition which allows you to start the engine with a push of a button on the dash board while stepping on the brake pedal. The Forward Collision Warning is available only in the SL Premium package. This warns the driver of an impending forward collision and automatically triggers the vehicle to reduce its speed by applying its brakes.

The high intensity LED headlights of the Rogue and the available Fog Lights make for clear visibility in dark and foggy weather conditions.

It is such a comfortable vehicle for short and long driving. The two front seats are designed with NASA inspired “zero gravity” ergonomic technology that reduces fatigue for drivers and passengers by enabling them keep a neutral seating position to make their trip and driving more pleasurable.

One major improvement that is so spectacular with the ROGUE is the availability of a 3rd row seating. The Nissan Rogue SV Family Tech Package comes with 7 seats.  This is an innovation that resonates in the minds of many buyers. The second row seats are designed with “EZ Flex Seating” system. This allows the seats to be folded flat. Apart from folding, the system allows the seats to slide, recline and move forward for easy access to the 3rd row.

The Nissan Rogue, especially the SL trim is an embodiment of technology with the “Nissan-Connect” Apps and Web Portal with functionalities that include the Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Locator, Emergency Calling, Roadside Assistance Service, Boundary Alert, Maintenance Alerts and Reminders, Curfew Alert, Speed Alert, Journey Planner, Destination Download Remote Door Lock and Unlock, Assisted Search, Google send-to-car and Vehicle Health Report.

The Automatic Collision Notification connects you with a live response specialist through your hands-free voice call when your air bags are deployed in an accident.  If needed, the Agent will dispatch emergency services to your location with the make, model and color of your vehicle.

With advanced technology, the Vehicle Locator in the ROGUE helps the Police to trace your vehicle if stolen by determining where it is located. With the Emergency Calling Feature, if your vehicle is involved in a minor accident where the airbags are not deployed, all you need do is press the “SOS” button in your Rogue and you will automatically be connected to a live Response Agent.

If you leave your ROGUE with a Valet Parking Attendant who, without your permission, decides to take your vehicle for a pleasure ride, the “VALET ALERT” in your vehicle will send notification to you if the Attendant drives beyond approximately 300 meters. In addition, if you give your ROGUE to a friend or family member, you can control the geographical area the vehicle can travel to. Simply set “stay within” or “keep out of” drive zones on the NISSANCONNECT services web portal. You will receive alerts immediately your vehicle is driven outside the set boundaries.

The maintenance alert and reminder in the NISSANCONNECT Services lets you know your next service appointment or alerts you if there is a problem in the vehicle that prompts the malfunction light indicator to switch on.

Sometimes, we forget to lock our vehicles while in a rush to board a flight or attend an urgent meeting, or we can’t find the key. The NISSAN ROGUE can be remotely locked or open by logging into the NISSANCONNECT services App or Web Portal.

Driving could be extremely boring but not in the Nissan Rogue as it comes packed with a host of features such as Streaming Audio via Bluetooth, Sirius Satellite Radio featuring 24/7 music without commercials, sports talk and coverage of NBA, college sports, the PGA Tour network etc. You can also get traffic information with Sirius-XM. This assists you with information about alternative routes in case there is impending delay due to accidents or road construction. You can also go on Facebook, do text messaging and Google search. With the Google search, all you need do is type or say a keyword such as “hotel” and this will trigger a list of the closest hotels.

The vehicle has a huge cargo space with a “Divide and Hide” design that makes it possible for the owner to arrange his/her belongings on separate shelves. Available on the Rogue is a panoramic sunroof.

Just like other Nissan vehicle, the Rogue is covered by a 3yr/60,000km (whichever comes first) comprehensive new vehicle warranty; 5yr/100,000kms (whichever
