On October 25, WWE presents Hell in a Cell at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. A regular part of WWE’s PPV schedule, the show is essentially an excuse to show off one of the company’s top grudge matches...a gimmick which has unfortunately been bogged down over the years from overexposure and its PG rating.

While Hell in a Cell started being a themed PPV in 2009, the match itself has been around since 1997. Originated with Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at Badd Blood, the match has become a go-to feud ender. Sometimes it’s a crazy spectacle. Sometimes it’s a pointless match where nothing interesting is done within its setting. Coincidentally, I ranked all 30 existing Hell in a Cell matches from worst to best a year ago.

Let’s look at what we have to look forward to in this year’s installment.

WWE Hell in a Cell 2015 Matches

Brock Lesnar vs The Undertaker

Here, we have a rare Hell in a Cell rematch. Back in 2002, Brock Lesnar jumped straight up into holding the WWE Championship within months. His first great challenger was the Undertaker and the two tore each other apart for several months, culminating in a Hell in a Cell bout. Brock won against his foe time and time again, ending with Undertaker showing him respect. Outside of a tussle at the end of the 2003 Royal Rumble match (again, with Brock winning), the two stayed out of each other’s way for a long, long time.

That is, until Undertaker saw Brock at a UFC event and publicly egged him on.

Brock eventually returned to WWE and did what was considered unthinkable: he ended the Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania. Undertaker vanished, only returning briefly for a match against Bray Wyatt at the following WrestleMania. For the 18 months following Undertaker’s defeat at Brock’s hands, Brock’s good buddy and advocate Paul Heyman wouldn’t shut up about that epic victory. Then again, why should he? It's a big deal!

Undertaker reappeared to kick Brock in the jimmy and cost him his match against Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The two nearly bulldozed through the WWE roster trying to get at each other and they were granted a rematch at SummerSlam. In the end, Brock made Undertaker tap, but due to some referee confusion, Undertaker got released from the move, punched Brock in the crotch and made him pass out to the Hell’s Gate. Since then, Brock’s been livid and disgusted.

Now it’s time to settle this once and for all.

SETH ROLLINS (C) VS. KANE

Seth Rollins and Kane have had friction for a good chunk of the year. As members of the Authority, Rollins would take Kane’s help for granted and would usually downplay his importance while highlighting his failures in-between begging him for forgiveness. Just when it looked like the two had finally seen eye-to-eye, Kane was injured at Brock Lesnar’s hands and Rollins would call him worthless. Kane disappeared for quite a while after that.

At the end of Night of Champions, where Rollins endured matches against John Cena and Sting, he was barely able to stand after retaining his WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Kane returned in his long-unseen Demon Kane form and destroyed him with a chokeslam and Tombstone. The next night on Raw, in his Corporate Kane persona, he acted like he wasn’t aware of the Night of Champions incident. Since then, Kane has been playing it very Jekyll and Hyde when dealing with Rollins and the Authority.

To bring some real closure to this long-running rivalry, Kane has been granted a title match against Rollins, but at a cost. If Demon Kane fails to become the new champion, then his Corporate Kane alter-ego will be fired. It doesn't look good for Rollins as they already had a Lumberjack Match and despite enduring a Big Show WMD punch and having much of the locker room beat him down, Kane was still able to cleanly defeat Rollins.

THE NEW DAY (C) VS. THE DUDLEY BOYZ

Since returning to WWE, the Dudley Boyz were quick to get title shots against the New Day. They faced the tag champs at Night of Champions and things appeared to be going their way. But once they had the match won, Xavier Woods interfered and cost them the match. The angry Dudleys put Xavier through a table in return. The two teams had a rematch at Madison Square Garden and the exact same thing happened.

Stephanie McMahon, being a jerk to the New Day for no reason other than making herself look cool, signed another match for Hell in a Cell. Since then, the New Day have been a bit more aggressive, not only defeating most of their opponents on the way to the PPV, but even standing tall at the end of one Raw after beating down the Dudleys, Dolph Ziggler, and John Cena.

ROMAN REIGNS VS. BRAY WYATT

For months, Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt have been at each other's throats due to Wyatt's infatuation with destroying Reigns' climb to the top of the company. Soon it became two-on-two when Dean Ambrose and Luke Harper joined the feud. Then Wyatt debuted Braun Strowman and Reigns struggled to find a good counter until Randy Orton came along. The team of Reigns, Ambrose, and Orton have been able to win against the Wyatt Family, but this isn't a war between armies.

Rather, this is about the war between generals. Reigns and Wyatt are the heart of this rivalry and when put in a singles match, there wasn't a clean winner. Instead, it led to a massive brawl on the outside, ending with both being knocked out in the wreckage. It's time for them to end this once and for all and Hell in a Cell is the perfect place for the final showdown.

It's also worth noting that we were supposed to have Ambrose and Orton take on Harper and Strowman, but that's no longer in the cards. Orton was injured and Harper has been removed from TV for whatever reason (possibly because of a kayfabe-breaking photo Chris Jericho tweeted and deleted that showed a bunch of wrestlers posing in Harper shirts, including Reigns and Wyatt coexisting). Erik Rowan is back, so there's that. Don't know if they'll have some kind of makeshift match at the PPV, but the official site shows nothing.

CHARLOTTE (C) VS. NIKKI BELLA

After the meandering of the Divas Revolution, things finally started to actually happen as Charlotte ended the record-breaking Divas Championship run of Nikki Bella. Immediately, things started brewing for a feud between Charlotte and former friend Paige, but it looks like that's on the backburner. In the meantime, Nikki has her rematch clause and Hell in a Cell will be the battleground.

There's not much to this one yet as Nikki feels like the third wheel when the second one isn't even involved in the match!

JOHN CENA (C) OPEN CHALLENGE

Ever since regaining the United States Championship, John Cena has returned to doing his weekly open challenge. It's basically the part of Raw where you know you're going to get a good match, even if Cena's going to kick out of every finisher and win in the end. He's taken on Xavier Woods, Big E, and Dolph Ziggler over the past couple weeks and there's been no lingering plot threads that have led into the Hell in a Cell PPV.

It's also worth noting that Cena's supposed to be taking some time off for a couple months. If anyone's going to dethrone him, it's probably going to be at the PPV. But who is it going to be? I'll guess we'll have to wait it out.

KEVIN OWENS (C) VS. RYBACK

At Night of Champions, Ryback lost his Intercontinental Championship to Kevin Owens thanks to Owens raking the eyes and getting a cheap roll-up pin. Since then, the two had a rematch, but when they fell to the outside, Owens decided to use the championship advantage to his...er...advantage by allowing himself to get counted out. Ryback has been targetting his foe since then and has been a looming threat to Owens week after week as they prepare for round three.

DOLPH ZIGGLER, CESARO, AND NEVILLE VS. KING BARRETT, SHEAMUS, AND RUSEV

This one was kind of thrown together for the pre-show as the previous pre-show match of Dean Ambrose and Randy Orton vs. Luke Harper and Braun Strowman got tossed in the trash. The main feud in all of this is Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev, a love rectangle that's been affected and turned into complete nonsense after WWE decided to make the real life engagement between Rusev and Lana as canon to their fictional show. Elsewhere, you have Barrett and Neville feuding despite the fact that they both hate Stardust more. Barrett's been tagging with his buddy Sheamus while Neville's been helped out by

This six-man tag already happened on the go-home episode of Raw with Barrett getting the pin for his team. We'll see if he's just as lucky in the rematch.

Gavin Jasper remembers that after Undertaker lost against Lesnar at their first Hell in a Cell encounter, he admitted to being well past his prime. This was 13 years ago.
