Nigeria defeat Algeria to claim first ever U-23 AFCON title

Oghenekaro Etebo scored twice, as Nigeria beat Algeria 2-1, to win their first ever U-23 AFCON title on Saturday night.

Etebo, who is the competition’s top scorer, opened scoring from the spot after he was brought down in the area. Segun Oduduwa headed past his own goalkeeper to bring the scores level.

However, Etebo struck what became the winner before the break.

Samson Siasia’s men will also be grateful to goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel, who saved Zinedine Ferhat’s penalty in the second half.

The Dream Team VI will represent Nigeria at the 2016 Olympics, along with Algeria and South Africa.

South Africa defeated hosts Senegal 3-1 on penalties, in the third-place match played earlier in the day.
