Where are the Senators as Saraki Storms CCT With 90 Lawyers?

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday appeared at the Code of Conduct Tribunal with Ninety lawyers

The number of lawyers at the resumed sitting of the tribunal is an increase from the 51 which appeared at the court on Tuesday and in other previous sittings.

On March 18, 81 lawyers, including six Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) had announced their appearance for Saraki at the CCT.

On March 11, 66 lawyers had also announced their appearance for the senate president.

But on Wednesday, Kanu Agabi (SAN), Saraki’s lead counsel, reeled off 90 names, including that of four senior lawyers.

Jocularly, he told Danladi Umar, chairman of the tribunal, that he would go down in history as one of the judges before whom the highest number lawyers appeared.

Agabi was absent on Tuesday, but Paul Usoro (SAN), one of Saraki’s lawyers held brief for him.

But while the number of lawyers at the court increased, the number of Senators who had always accompanied Saraki to the trial shrunk to 12.

Saraki who arrived at the court at 10:05am came in company of at least 12 senators.

This is the lowest number of senators to accompany him to the CCT since the beginning of his case in September 2015  – the highest being 81.

When Saraki first appeared at the Tribunal on September 22, 2015 after the tribunal had issued a bench warrant for his arrest, at least 50 senators on that day.

The second time was on October 21, 2015 when he was accompanied to the tribunal by at least 81 senators.

The trial at this time is ongoing for the second day in a row after the prosecution called in one of its witnesses on Tuesday.
