Pastor boasts on Facebook about his dogs killing monkeys

Pastor boasts on Facebook

Yes, you read it correctly. A PASTOR from Amanzimtoti has recently been criticised for boasting on Facebook that his dogs killed three vervet monkeys, which were disturbing his peace.

HE WROTE IT WAS A MASSACRE WHEN HIS DOGS ATTACKED THE MONKEYS

According to a report by IOL, Fanie Hennop wrote:

“Today is a day like the Olympic opening ceremony for me. We have had a tribe of monkeys terrorising our dogs for months.
“Two days ago, one of these velvet (sic) barbarians, while teasing the four daschunds, accidentally fell from the gutter.
“Needless to say it was a massacre. As luck would have it two friends tried to save the unlucky fellow. We buried the remains of all three of the velvet (sic) offenders.
Hennop wrote that his four dachshunds were rewarded with lean mince and a huge bone each.
He wrote that since the incident, “I have not had one avocado stolen, one apple thieved from my house or one pot of food vandalised.
“Three days of absolute blissful silence. I have now redesigned all my gutter brackets to fail when carrying excess weight.”
“You should see the excitement of the four daschunds.”

THE PASTOR HAS SINCE TRIED REMOVED THE POST

The Facebook post has since been deleted.

Hennop has since posted an apology on his Facebook:

“Dear Amanzimtoti community
Regarding my post yesterday regarding my dogs and the monkeys I again want to offer my sincerest and humblest apologies to everyone who I hurt or offended by the post. I know that it was in very poor taste, insensitive and a very stupid thing to do. My poor choice of words and lack of empathy had a lot more to do with the relief that my dogs got out of the altercation with only a few minor cuts. It does however not excuse the happy tone and comments I made. They were wrong.
“I could not help or prevent the situation but I could have had much more sympathy for the very very unfortunate incident. Posting on social media about the outcome was plain stupid.
“If I was able to prevent the incident from happening I surely would have. I again humbly offer my sincerest apology and can only hope that the community that I have been part of for 10 years will find a way to forgive me eventually.
“I do not hate the monkeys. I do however hate the less than desirable interaction between them and my dogs. I do undertake to do all that I can to minimize the interaction and cultivate a place where nothing like the sad incident happens again.
I do want to state that I am only a member and volunteer at Amanzimtoti Gemeenskapskerk and I am not the Pastor. I had a meeting with the pastor and the church board this afternoon where I also apologized to them for the negative comments and messages my actions caused.”

Understandably the remarks by the pastor have caused outrage in the community, especially those that have made it their mission to protect the monkeys.

MANY ARE DISGUSTED THAT A PASTOR WOULD MAKE SUCH REMARKS

KZN Monkey Helpline spokesperson Steve Smit told the media he was trying to get a profile of Hennop and his location so that the SPCA could intervene.

Smit said Hennop set the worst kind of example of who and what a true pastor should be.

“Your gloating account of the brutal killing of three monkeys by your pack of dogs and your spiteful intention to engineer further such brutal killings by, and rewards for, your pack of Dachshunds is despicable. Is this the same pack of Dachshunds you whine about being emotionally traumatised by these ‘velvet(sic) barbarians’?”

Smit said encouraging dogs to attack other animals is an offence under the Animal Protection Act with heavy fines and jail time.
