What Is Ogboni Fraternity?
The Ogboni fraternity, which is known in Ijebu as Osugbo is an indigenous institution of the Yoruba people in Nigeria, Togo, and the Republic of Benin, as well as the Edo ethnic group.
The fraternity performs a range of political and religious activities. They exercise a profound influence on monarchs and also serve as high courts of jurisprudence in the offenses.
This society according to history is founded on 18 December 1914 and its headquarter is located at No. 38, Abeokuta Street, Adekunle, Lagos, Nigeria.
For better understanding, there is Ogboni Confraternity and Reformed Ogboni Confraternity. They are considered to be the same, however, there is a slight difference.
Ogboni Confraternity is a secret society, a cult, while the Reformed Ogboni Confraternity is transparent in some cases and they don’t consider themselves to be a secret society.

How To know An Ogboni Member
Here are the common ways to identify an Ogboni member:
1. Through Signs And Symbols.
As you can see in the photos above, the Ogboni signs and symbols are usually connected with the mother of the earth, hence that’s where their source of power came from.
Most of their signs and symbols are similar to pyramids or the eyes of God. They also have a breast milk symbol which according to them is a welcome sign for Ogboni society.
The fraternity loves the idea of a woman being part of everything they do, hence their source of power comes from the Goddess of Earth.
2. Through Handshake
They normally use their left hand for their handshake. In addition to that, almost all their rites are done on the left preference. For instance, the orientation of their dance steps is towards the left.
According to them, the right hand is for humans, and the left is for the gods.
3. Through dressing
The Ogboni dress code is always distinct in every meeting. They normally wear white trousers, a wrap of white cloth on their chest, and they put on a large hat. They also put a white cloth on their shoulder just like the priests do.
Aside from that, you can identify them on so many things, like their staff. It’s very noticeable and prominent because of the different statues engraved on its head.

Popular Nigerian Herbalist, Oluwo Olawole Olakunle 2021 revealed that there are many pastors in the Ogboni Confraternity, and anyone can join.

The supreme leader of the Reformed ogboni Fraternity, Francis Oluwagbenro Meshioye some years ago said that being a member of the Ogboni does not stop you from practicing the religions of your choice.
