A man has allegedly turned into a tricycle (Keke Napep) in the Pedro area of Shomolu, Lagos state, after being forced to pick up a key which he dropped on the road.

According to a social media user who shared the unbelievable story, the man had accosted a young boy and had asked him to pick up the key which he (the man) threw on the floor, but the boy refused. The man was said to have insisted but the boy refused picking the key up. This got the attention of the people and the man was said to have told everyone who cared to listen that the boy was being disrespectful. But the crowd forced the man to pick his key up by himself and the unexpected happened.

"Please parents, teachers and guardians, continuously educate your wards on the need to be careful and not talk to strangers on the road. An incident occurred at Pedro, Shomolu on Tuesday 22/11/12, precisely at famous bus stop. A man stopped a child returning from school and asked him to pick up a key from the ground.

"The child refused asking why the man couldn’t pick it up himself and this got the man agitated and he started shouting at the child saying he lacked respect for his elders and all sorts but the child still refused.

"This attracted the attention of passers-by and luckily, a police van was passing by and they stopped to find out what the problem was. After listening to the man, they asked the child who owned the key and the boy replied that it was for the man so the police got suspicious and asked the man to pick up the key. He refused and was forced to. Immediately he picked the key, he turned into a brand new tricycle (keke maruwa)! Everybody ran away and even the police men were scared.

"The tricycle was eventually pushed to the Pedro police station. This is a real life incidence and anyone in doubt can go to the Pedro police station to ascertain the authencity of this post. When the man’s wife was called to the station, she said her husband comes home everyday with a brand new tricycle and gives it to people on higher purchase and she didn’t know where he got them from.

"These ritualits are more desperate to make money and they device new means everyday but i pray that God will continue to protect our children and increase them in wisdom."

Nawa oh!

This may just be a memo or just another sincere piece of my mind to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa who is fast building a name for himself as “Delta State is broke”, yet those around him live large like kings and queens.

Yesterday made it exactly one year that I had a private meeting with him in Delta State lodge, Lagos. Unfortunately, all the things we discussed one year ago have not been fulfilled. It all turned out to be the usual promise and fail from a Nigerian politician, with penchant for lying.

I’m very certain that the result of the Ondo State election where the incumbent governor, Olusegun Mimiko of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost to the main opposition, the All Progressive Congress (APC) shocked Okowa to the bone marrows. As I type, I’m certain that he would be in the governor’s lodge trying to analyze where they went wrong, inspite of all the plans they made in Abuja. Mimiko is not your everyday governor who should lose an election, but the people have become wiser that you can’t use them and dump them. On the day of reckoning, they will pay back in your own coins, and they did just that to Mimiko by voting Rotimi Akeredolu.

In Delta State, the people have not fared better under Okowa, despite the huge support they gave him during the last elections, where they fought an incumbent governor just to see him succeed. Everyone who truly supported him are today regretting why they did so, as he has turned the government into a mini cabal, where only few call the shots and gives out crumbs to poor supporters.

Even those he appointed as Commissioners, Special Advisers and Special Assistants are wailing and wishing the government comes to an end, so they can support someone who has the interest of the state and their own welfare. Today, Tony Okowa has practically turned Elomax Hotel into his bedroom, where he wastes millions lodging, while his house in Okpanam Road is left to rot away. His brother is the governor and he’s the Sports Commission boss with so much money to throw around, yet no single success has he recorded in sports since he came onboard, unlike Pinnick Amaju who turned the commission to a budding sports centre.

Who is deceiving Okowa that he’s making life prosperous for Deltans when he has impoverished them and made life worse for them. it is obvious that a cabal has hijacked the government that he and his Principal Secretary are not aware of. It is crystal clear that he may not be fully in control of the government but relies on what his childhood friend who is now a big contractor and consultant in the state tells him. Like someone once asked. “Is Lawrence Oshiegbu the governor”?

Who will believe the slogan of “Delta State is broke”, when we now have civilian billionaires in his government? Okowa should tell Deltans who the Okpuzor families from Ika are? They are unarguably the richest Deltans at the moment. My days of private investigations on them reveal dangerous details that will shock the state if reported?

The governor cannot keep pretending like all is well when everything we all struggled together to achieve is falling apart right before our eyes, and the opposition fast gaining ground. Of what use is giving Uche Okpunor another N2 billion this month for Airport project that does not benefits the common man? Where are all the numerous investors that he held meetings with amidst fanfare and signed MOUs with when he came on board in 2015? Why has the budget for DESOPADEC not been released for the commission to begin work with? Why are people from Delta Central and South crying and those from Ika dancing Skelewu because of the numerous contracts they now get? Is this a government of nepotism and tribalism?

Ondo State victory for the APC should serve as a lesson to Okowa that you cannot continue to take the people for a ride and appeal to them few months to your elections to vote for you. The slogan of “PDP all the way” worked last elections because we saw in him a fresh idea and had to vote people that could work with him. Thankfully enough, we have seen his kind of person and can now judge better.

With the current disenchantment against him and his Ika government, he may just be gunning for one term in office. The emperor in Abuja has already given a mandate to his top strikers from South South to capture Rivers or Delta and the easiest of them is Delta. Rivers State is too violent a state to toy with. Nyesom Wike as a governor is doing extremely well and has cleared all pension arrears in the State, while Okowa is not only owing workers but also pensioners like his failed Ondo State counterpart.

Karma is a dangerous bitch that can never forget the wrongs done. The days of reckoning will soon be close and Okowa will realize that he cannot get the votes of Delta Central through his SSG, Festus Agas or his Commissioner for Environment, John Nani alone but will need the combination of those he has abandoned.

Like one of his top aides said recently “Na only who you follow chop, you dey follow drown”. As it stands, Okowa is cruising alone with sycophants hailing him on. His Commissioner for Economic Planning, Kingsley Emu believes that all is well and that the governor has blocked the loopholes through which funds are siphoned. Whenever he tells me that, I just nod, knowing that he’s not a politician but a technocrat that does not know what goes on in the system and doesn’t feels the anger on the street.

Those who truly supported him in 2014 are already taking a walk out of his government to join hands with the progressives and he doesn’t seem to know. The belief that Nigerians are angry with President Muhammadu Buhari should not mean that if Deltans are given a credible candidate from APC who has not tasted the seed of corruption, they won’t vote for such a person.

As a governor, he’s extremely nice and dedicated to work. He has the heart of gold to deliver prosperity to Deltans. He has the desire to truly make Delta the hub of industrialization and a commercial city of repute, but unfortunately swallowed by unseen hands that manipulate him.

These little things matter…

I ask the nurse if I can have a few minutes with Louise and she agrees. I dash into the labour room, expecting to find Louise in a state in the throes of labour, but instead she is lying on her side in a bed, calmly scrolling through her phone.

“Are you OK,” I ask, concerned.

“Yes, in fact I’m even wondering why I am here. It doesn’t feel like it’s time,” she says.

“Well, the nurse seems to think so,” I point out. “Anyway, I need your boyfriend’s number. I need to make sure he’s informed.”

“I already called him,” Louise says. Of course. Why did I think she was incapable of doing it herself? “He’s on his way.”

I nod, and then sit down next to her and wait quietly for a few minutes. Suddenly, Louise winces.

“What’s wrong?” I jump out of my seat.

“I just feel, so… waaaaAAAAAAAHHHH!” she lets out the longest, hardest wail I have ever heard issue from a woman. “CALL THE NURSE LIIIIIZZZ, CALLL THE NURRRRSSSSEEEEE!!” she shouts.

I stand there helpless for a few seconds. Then Louise suddenly grabs my hand and squeezes my fingers so tight, I feel like she’s on a mission to make me feel as much pain as she is in. She draws her face right up close to mine and snarls, “I swear if you don’t get me someone to give me a painkiller I will kiiiiiiiIIIIIILLLLLLLLL YO-,”

Her threat is cut short by the entry of the nurse on duty. She surveys the scene and instantly comes to a conclusion.

“Right, it looks like active labour has started. We’ll need someone to hold her hand until her partner arrives. Thank you for being here. Help her breathe and if you need anything, just ring that bell.” Then she walks away.

“But this is an emergency, she needs medicine!” I yell after her. The nurse doesn’t respond. In the distance I can hear more yelling and cursing from other patients. I guess it must be a busy season for this section of the hospital.

I turn to Louise, who has slumped back in the bed, streams of sweat running down her face and a look of tense anxiety, as if she is afraid of the next wave of pain.

“OK then, looks like it’s just me and you. What did you say your guy’s number is again?”

“He’s called Steve,” she says between heavy breaths. “Just scroll through my phone you’ll see his number.” I do as she says and transfer his number to my phone to call, but before I can actually dial, Louise struggles to sit up, grabs my hand and starts screaming bloody murder again. I don’t know what to do but I stand there and absorb the pain her grip is causing me while I ineffectually rub her back and tell her to breathe steady.

“Gah! STOP telling me to breathe!” she yells. Then just as suddenly, the new wave of pain dies down and she slumps back on her side. “Have you called Steve?”

“How!? You were holding my hand so tight I couldn’t do anything!”

“Give me that phone,” she snarls, grabbing her phone out of my hand and dialing his number. “Get here right now!” she yells into the phone and then tosses it at me. The nurse comes back into the room.

“You’ve got to help us!” I plead, running towards her and grabbing her by her sleeve.

“Did she have another contraction while I was out?” I nod. She looks at her watch, and then consults the chart on the clipboard in her hand. “Right, it looks like they are starting to come quite close together. It’s time to take her to the delivery room. Let me get someone to wheel her in.”

“But wait! What do I do with her in the meantime!?” I ask, but once again, it’s too late. She’s walking out of the room.

I turn back to Louise. “OK, you just need to breath-,” Once more, I do not have a chance to finish that sentence as another contraction takes hold of Louise. Judging from the intensity of her scream, this one is harder than the last two. I stand there, helpless, wondering what I can do to ease her pain. But before I can think of anything, the nurse comes back with two more who promptly transfer her onto a wheeled bed and cart her off. I amble back into the waiting room to wait for Louise’s man.

Suddenly a familiar-looking man comes rushing into the room.

“Where is she??” he yells at no one in particular. Then he turns and spots me. He freezes. I freeze. We stare at each other. Our jaws drop. What is Steve, Fatma’s boyfriend, doing here in the maternity ward of the hospital? Could he be the ‘Steve’ who is also Louise’s baby daddy?

The man identified as Justice Gorwa says he discovered his wife Chantelle Chifamba’s illicit affair with his friend Talent Guhwa when she fell sick after allegedly aborting the latter’s pregnancy.

While speaking to H-metro, Justice said the adulterous affair between Chantelle and Talent was the greatest betrayal he has gone through in his life.

“There is nothing as heart-rending as being hurt by people you trust.

“I never thought that my best friend and my wife would be so heartless that they would have a sexual relationship.

“People in our neighbourhood used to tell me that something fishy was going on between my wife and Talent but I never took it serious because I thought they didn’t understand how we relate as families.

“I only got to know about it when Chantelle aborted the pregnancy and Talent started demanding the child from her,” said Justice.

Giving details how he found out about the secret affair, Justice said Chantelle and Talent allegedly shared engaged in the illicit act while he was at work.

“I have always been a good husband and father; I would go out of my way to support my wife as well as our child but for some reason I wasn’t good enough for Chantelle.

“I used to send her money during the time that she was sleeping with Talent since I was out of town with work.

“When I came back, Talent started demanding the baby from Chantelle that she had aborted and that was how I got to know about it.

“The issue of her abortion has become the talk in our neighbourhood and the woman who helped her to abort is also from our neighbourhood.

“The foetus is said to have been dumped close to some banana trees in our neighbourhood,” he said.

Talent Guhwa

Meanwhile, Chantelle has since applied for a protection order against Justice at the Harare civil court. She claims that Justice started to be violent towards her accusing her of cheating on him.

“He is the one who has been cheating, I discovered it through text messages he has been sending to his girlfriend.

“I left his house naked because he said I came with nothing and I was supposed to go back without anything.

“He has been coming to my mother’s place hurling stones and urinating in the garden,” she claimed.

Talent’s wife, only identified as Amai Wayne, confirmed her husband’s affair with Chantelle. She also said the affair was now straining her marriage.

My husband and I have never been in good books ever since the time he had an adulterous affair with Chantelle.

“He has been accusing me of being the reason Chantelle aborted the pregnancy but I wasn’t involved in all of that,” she said.

  • Sara Baartman, an African Used as a European “Circus Animal”

  • The Europeans even disrespected her humanity to the extent of displaying her brain, skeleton and sexual organs in a Paris museum until 1974.

  • On 29 October 1810, Saartjie “Sara” Baartman, a nineteen year old Khoisan woman signed a contract to be taken from Cape Town to London to be exhibited for entertainment purposes. Though she was illiterate, history allegedly claims she signed the contract with an English ship surgeon named William Dunlop who was a friend to Pieter Willem Cezar and Hendrik Cezar. Pieter Willem Cezar had bought Sara Baartman as a slave at sixteen and she worked for Pieter’s brother, Hendrik. It was here that she was named Saartjie, the Dutch form of Sara. The history of colonialism was so unfair to her that she was stripped of her identity and her bodily integrity. Her story is the full representation of the evils of a hybrid of colonialism, slavery, racism and sexism. The Europeans even disrespected her humanity to the extent of displaying her brain, skeleton and sexual organs in a Paris museum until 1974. She only got a dignified burial almost two centuries after her death, in 2002.

The woman who lost everything…even her name

Sara Baartman was born to a Gonaquasub group of the KhoiKhoi in 1789 at the Gamtoos River which is found in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Her first major loss was that of her mother who died when Sara was just two and her father, a cattle driver died when she reached adolescence. She got married to a Khoikhoi drummer and had a child together. The child died soon after death. With the coming of colonialism, came conflicts between the natives and the settlers. Her husband was murdered by the Dutch colonists, her first loss to a system that would take her life from her. After working for the Dutch in Cape Town, she allegedly signed the contract which would take her to London to perform. What made her special? BBC says she had what was called “steatopygia”, resulting in extremely protuberant buttocks due to a build-up of fat. What she had, most women can only dream of but at this point, the Europeans were eager to gobble up anything that asserted their superiority and somehow, Baartman was used in that narrative. They used her as a confirmation of the dark skinned people’s inferiority; their insatiable appetite for sex as shown by the size of their buttocks and their genitalia. Promoters even described her genitals as resembling the skin that hangs from a turkey’s throat.

Baartman was first displayed in Piccadilly where descriptions of her treatment reported how she was exhibited on a “stage two feet high, along which she was led by her keeper and exhibited like a wild beast, being obliged to walk, stand or sit as he ordered”. The Guardian rightly says, “The crowd viewed her as little different from an animal.” Like an animal, she was sold four years later to Paris where she was under the control of a wild animal exhibitor in a travelling circus. That she was now a part of his “show animals” leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It is in Paris that Napoleon’s surgeon, George Cuvier saw her and developed a “scientific interest”. His idea of science was proving the superiority of the white people. In fact, he described Sara’s movements as having “something brusque and capricious about them that recalled those of a monkey”. Men like Cuvier propounded the idea of a Homo Sapiens Monstrous; more ape than human, devoid of the intelligence and emotional capabilities the whites were endowed with. The Edinburgh Review in 1863 is famed for writing, “There is no vast difference between the intelligence of a Bosjesman and that of an oran-utan, and that the difference is far greater between Descartes or Homer and the Hottentot than between the stupid Hottentot and the ape.” Such depiction of Africans (particularly the Khoisan) as the most developed ape but least developed human was common.

When Baartman died of what is presumed to be pneumonia, syphilis and alcoholism, George Cuvier made a plaster cast of her body before dissecting it. Her preserved brain and genitals were placed in jars and displayed at the Museum of Man in Paris. They were only removed in 1974 and she got a proper burial 187 years after her death. Her story is so emotional that when the world heard of Beyonce’s plan to write and star in a movie based on Baartman’s life, there was a massive backlash. Jean Burgess, a chief from the Khoikhoi group Baartman hailed from is on record for saying Beyonce lacked “the basic human dignity to be worthy of writing Sara’s story, let alone playing the part”. Similarly, a Kim Kardashian photo-shoot which mimicked contemporary drawings of Baartman was widely criticised. The looks of black women are a thing of politics with body-shaming and commodification forming the lens through which they are viewed. Baartman probably suffered the worst forms of subjugation and dehumanisation at the hands of Europeans. This culture of using looks to perpetuate black women oppression should come to an end. Baartman’s story should not be re-enacted in modern society two centuries after her unfortunate death.

The Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, on Thursday, said it rescued five infants of about 14-month-old from beggars who used them to solicit for alms.

The infants were rescued at the Iyana-Ipaja area of the state and three suspects were arrested.

This is coming barely two months after the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development rescued three babies and apprehended two women for using less than a month old baby to beg for alms,.

The Ministry on October 4 also arrested a woman who hired three babies just to use them to beg at a pedestrian bridge in the state.

Investigations have also revealed that many of the kids were engaged directly for begging by their biological mothers while others were ‘rented’ and the beggars usually move from one location to the other, calling on passers-by and motorists they come across to assist them, and using babies or kids in their hands to elicit sympathy.

The Permanent Secretary, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, who paraded the suspects and rescued infants on Thursday before newsmen in the state, said the women and their infants were apprehended during routine rescue operations by the ministry.

“It is very sad that most of the beggars are not the biological parents of the children they use for begging. It is our responsibility as government to protect the dignity of children being used as tools for begging which is a punishable offence.”

While reaffirming government’s commitment to enforce the Child Right Law, the Perm Sec said one of the women was caught without her children as they escaped arrest on sighting the rescue team.

One of the suspects, Shakira Olatunde, 35, claimed her husband absconded when she gave birth to her child. She said: “I was selling rice and beans but when Customs seized my goods I became helpless.

“When I was selling sachet water, the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) officials arrested me,” Olatunde added.

The other, Mrs. Abosede Ayuba, who was arrested with two identical twins, claimed that she lost her husband when she gave birth to the twins.

According to her, “I used to work before but I stopped working when I did not have strength to work. As I speak, I don’t have a cup of ‘Gaari’ at home to give them.”

Former presidential aide on new media, Reno Omokri, has reacted to the marriage of 14 years old Habiba Isa by the Emir of Katsina, his Royal highness, Alhaji Abdulmumin Usman.

The Katsina Emirate Council during the week released a statement explaining that the teenager was never kidnapped or forced into marriage.

The council said the marriage and Isa’s conversion to Islam were voluntarily and willingly entered into by the girl.

Reacting, Reno urged the Katsina Emirate Council to reconsider their assertion that a girl of 14 has the capacity to not only change her religion from Christianity to Islam but to also consent to marriage without her parents’ permission.

“The emir of Katsina is 65 years old. Habiba is 14. Between them there is a 51 year age gap. The emir is powerful, Habiba is powerless. Under such a situation, how can the Katsina Emirate Council justify this decision?

“A girl of 14 can’t vote and can’t get a driver’s license which are much less complicated than marriage, so how can she consent to marriage.

“Let us assume that a Christian in Kano met a 14 year old Muslim girl on her way to school or perhaps to the market and engages her in conversation that leads to her conversion to Christianity and then announces to the world that they are to be married. How would that situation go down in Kano? Would it be acceptable?

“The Katsina Emirate Council should consider the Hadith of prophet Mohammed that says: “None of you [truly] believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.

“The emir is meant to be a father to all the people of Katsina emirate. I appeal to him to consider the distress of Habiba’s family. Even if he wants to marry Habiba, at least let her attain the age of 18 and if he cannot wait until she attains that age then parental consent is a must!

“The emir should be mindful of the fact that Nigeria is a very fragile nation and we need respected and beloved royal fathers like his royal highness, Alhaji Abdulmumin Usman, to help us strengthen our union.

“I sincerely urge the Katsina Emirate Council to reconsider their decision. Also, I urge the Body of Christ in Nigeria, to exercise restraint in their reaction to this matter. Disrespectful and angry reactions will not help Habiba Isa and will even undo years of inter faith understanding that many have been building between Christianity and Islam.

“I am confident that the Katsina Emirate Council and his Royal highness would do the right thing and return Habiba to her Christian family”, he stated.

Confusion is presently playing out between two families from Ebonyi State over alleged plans by a pastor to sacrifice their daughter for ritual purposes.

A woman identified as Patience Ohelimo, who is a native of Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has accused her husband, a pastor, of alleged plans to sacrifice her for ritual purposes.

Patience, who is currently undergoing treatment at a private home in Ilishan Remo in Ogun State, told Vanguard that she was tortured, gang-raped and almost sacrificed for ritual purposes in Port Harcourt, the River State capital, by her husband, Uchenna Joseph, and some unknown persons.

Patience said,“I was a petty trader in Ikorodu town in Lagos before my plans to get married, while my husband was a full time pastor.

“We were to have our wedding introduction in 2014 and were planning for a church wedding when I got pregnant, which put the wedding plans on hold.

“In the course of our relationship, I expended all my earnings but this was not in vain as I gave birth to a boy in February 2016.

“Three months after, my husband suggested we should visit his friend in Port Harcourt to raise fund for my business. So we left our base in Ogun State and during our three months stay, I became a prophetess and also assisted in evangelism, but on one fateful day, my husband conspired with his friends to sacrifice me for ritual purposes.

“My refusal earned me incarceration as they tortured and gang-raped me. This took place for a number of days until I reached my sister through a text message and she came to my rescue.

“They separated me from my son and were about tying me to the ceiling fan when my sister arrived the one-room church. My wedding gown and other items were kept for two years as he is yet to complete the dowry,” she lamented, vowing not to return to her cleric husband.

“I have spent all my earnings on this marriage which has almost cost me my life and I will never return to that home,” she said.

But the cleric, on his part, debunked the allegation by his wife and described it as a conspiracy and a ploy to get unnecessary attention from members of the public as he was yet to complete the required money meant to pay as dowry on his wife.

Pastor Uchenna alleged that his wife was both psychologically and emotionally imbalance during their stay in Port Harcourt.

He said,“She used to see visions and loved evangelism but one day, she was on evangelism field with my friend’s relative when she was spiritually attacked and she started exhibiting strange behaviour.

“But my mistake was that I did not inform her parents believing it was a minor issue until she became violent and we had to seek spiritual help by inviting some pastors to conduct deliverance for her.

“She however sent a message to her elder sister and I was misunderstood. The scars on her body were as a result of the violent situation she found herself.

“How can I connive with others to kill the mother of my baby? Her family was just being harsh on me for failure to complete the dowry because out of N100,000, I only paid N40,000,” he added.

Meanwhile, as Patience continues her spiritual and medical treatment, a case was lodged at the Ilisan Remo Police Division for investigations, where a source at the Division who pleaded anonymity said the Police was conducting a thorough investigation on the case and noting that the matter was more of a family issue.

The source added,”We arrested the Pastor but he has been granted bail. We are doing our best to unravel the situation.”

A married woman, turned up at a court in Harare, Zimbabwe and exchanged blows with her husband’s new bride in full view of people. She also threatened to beat up her husband who watched helplessly as new woman was attacked and beaten. She stormed into the wedding room moments before her exchanged vows with his partner.

The woman reportedly informed the marriage officer, that the groom, was her husband and that they had four children.

The court immediately stopped the wedding after it was proven beyond doubt that she was still married to the man. According to reports, the scorned woman said;

“He is my husband and we got married in 1992 in Chiendambuya,.“We have four children and our marriage is still subsisting. He has not divorced me. I only discovered that he wanted to marry his girlfriend when I saw a profile picture of her on his phone. We stay together in our matrimonial house in Crowborough here in Harare but he leaves me in the house and goes to co-habit with his girlfriend in Mufakose.”
