EFCC kicks against Fani-Kayode's verdict

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has kicked against the discharge and acquittal of former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.

The Judge, Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia in her verdict on the alleged laundering of about N100 million by Fani-Kayode ruled that the allegations were not strong enough to nail the accused.

The EFCC, had alleged the Fani embezzled over N100 million while he was minister of culture and tourism and subsequently, aviation minister, began in 2008 before Justice Ramat Mohammed.

After a protracted legal tussle, Ofili-Ajumogobia in her judgment delivered on Wednesday freed the rope off Fani’s neck.

However, the anti-graft commission has said it would appeal the judgment.

Already, the Commission in a statement signed Wednesday by its Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said it was making efforts to obtain a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement, with a view to studying same and responding appropriately.

The statement reads: “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC today received with shock, the ruling of Justice Rita Ofili- Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court Lagos, acquitting Mr. Femi Fani-kayode, a former minister of aviation, of the two count charge of money laundering preferred against him by the Commission.

“The Commission is making effort to obtain a Certified True Copy of the ruling, to enable it respond appropriately after careful review of the judgment.”
