Sex Gets Better After You Turn 50, Study Reveals

It’s been the butt of tons of jokes: After you get married, your sex life hugely declines. Researchers have, unfortunately, found that to be true. But they also discovered your sex life lights up again after 50 [via The New York Times].

A study published in the archives of sexual behavior (which sound like the best archives ever, by a long shot) found that, out of 1,656 adults, 65 percent in their first year of marriage were having sex upwards of three times a month. That number dropped to 40 percent after 25 years of marriage, 35 percent at 50, but then shot up to 42 percent once adults hit 65. And it keeps climbing. “Sexual frequency doesn’t return to two to three times a month, but it moves in that direction,” said Samuel Stroope, the lead author of the study.

As adults get older and their friend groups start to drop off or disband, they spend a lot more time with each other, explains Stroope. And if you’re kind of freaked out about having lots of gray, wrinkly, senior-citizen sex when you get older, don’t worry. Another researcher on the study, Karl Pillemer, told the NY Times: “Many people told me that you don’t notice the physical differences in a long marriage. The person still seems the same to you.”
