Truvada pill cuts HIV spread by 86 %, study says

On Tuesday, the UK Medical Research Council released results of a study showing the Truvada drug cut the spread of HIV, by 86 percent among men who had sex with other men.

The participants took it one day before sex and up to two days after, and a total of 545 men were surveyed. Those who took part were considered to have a high risk of being infected by HIV, because they were having sex about 10 times a month, with eight partners every two months.

The AFP reports that the University of Washington is leading a trial in Kenya and Uganda, to test whether heterosexual partners (one HIV + and the other HIV -), can benefit from the strategy employed in the latest study. (Pre-exposure prophylaxis).
