Causes of depression
Many factors result in depression. They can range from biological to circumstantial.
Popular causes include:
1. Brain structure
There’s a higher risk for depression if the frontal lobe of your brain is lowly active. However, scientists don’t know if this occurs before or after the onset of depressive symptoms.
2. Pain
People who feel emotional or chronic physical pain for a long time are typically more likely to have depression.
3. Hormone levels
Changes in female hormones estrogen and progesterone when a variety of periods like when the menstrual cycle, postpartum period, perimenopause, or menopause may all increase a person’s risk for depression.
4. Family history
You’re at a higher risk for experiencing depression if you have a family history of depression or some other mood disorder.
5. Early childhood trauma
Some activities affect the way your body reacts to fear and stressful conditions.
6. Medical conditions
Specific situations may cast you at higher risk, like chronic illness, insomnia, chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, heart attack, and cancer.
7. Substance use
A history of substance or alcohol misuse can be harmful and put at greater risk.
8. Brain chemistry
There is normally a chemical imbalance in parts of the brain that controls mood, thoughts, sleep, appetite, and behaviour in persons who experience depression.
Have a serious check on yourself if you notice any of the listed causes above.
