The man who went blind in prison while awaiting Trial to spend 5 years behind bar

BLIND marijuana dealer Nura Abdullahi, to five years imprisonment by a Lagos Federal High Court for unlawfully dealing in 62kg of Indian hemp after being arrested and arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Mr Abdullahi, 21, was said to have gone blind in prison while awaiting trial since his arrest on March 19, 2013. In his ruling, Justice Mohammed Yunusa sentenced Mr Abdullahi to five years in imprisonment following his confessional statement and the exhibits tendered before the court by the prosecution.

Arrested by the NDLEA, the convict, who was re-arraigned on September 3 on a one count charge of unlawful possession of marijuana, pleaded guilty to the offence. During the proceedings, NDLEA prosecutor, J I Aernan, reviewed the facts of the case, tendering the illicit substances recovered from Mr Abdullahi two years ago.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 11 (b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30, Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. Following the evidence presented before the court, Justice Yunusa said he was convinced that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
