Don’t deny your husbands sex, minister Karooro tells women

In Summary

The minister was referring to a man who recently hacked his wife to death in the municipality over allegations that his wife denied him his conjugal rights. The suspect is currently in police custody.

Bushenyi- The minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development has appealed to women not to deny their husbands conjugal rights, saying lack of it breeds domestic violence.

Ms Mary Karooro Okurut said denying men sex is a cause of most killings in homes.

“It has been discovered that women no longer respect their marriages. Denying your husband sex without a sound reason like sickness, is denying your husband his rights,” Ms Karooro, who is also the Bushenyi Woman MP, told women groups in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality on Sunday.

The minister was referring to a man who recently hacked his wife to death in the municipality over allegations that his wife denied him his conjugal rights. The suspect is currently in police custody.

She said it is surprising to see couples who have been married for more than 20 years conflicting over such issues.

“You have been married for 20 years, why deny your husband sex?” Ms Karooro said, attracting murmurs from women.

She, however, accused some men of not living up to their responsibilities in the home.

“Men also have to take up their responsibility in homes, and provide for their families. It is very

difficult for a woman who will stay with an irresponsible husband,” Ms Karooro said.

According to the annual crime statistics by the police, domestic violence and sexually related offences account for a significant proportion of complaints received.
