Tragedy struck yesterday at Bariga area of Lagos when a 65-yearold woman, Adejoke Adefuye was burnt beyond recognition in a bungalow set ablaze by suspected cult members in the area.
The tragic incident took place at 19, Oshinfolarin Street, Bariga. Sunday Telegraph learnt that for several hours anarchy reigned in the area when the hoodlums took over the street and set the building ablaze after destroying other properties in the area. It was gathered that the incident took place yesterday.
Sunday Telegraph learnt that the cultists had been terrorising the area since Friday evening before attacking the affected building on Saturday morning.
Speaking with Sunday Telegraph, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Michael Akindele, who confirmed the incident, said the incident occurred around 9 am. Akindele said the agency’s Emergency Response Team, ERT, along with the Lagos State Fire service, Lagos Ambulance Services, LASAMBU; State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU were quickly drafted to the scene and brought the situation under control. He added the police from the Bariga Divisional Police Station, responded to the distress call.
He confirmed that the cultists had been terrorising the area before attacking the affected building this morning, trapping the occupants inside and set the building on fire.
“A 65-year-old woman, Adejoke Adefuye, was burnt beyond recognition in one of the rooms. She was the only mortality recorded and has been taken to the morgue by SEHMU. Other occupants of the building sustained minor injuries that have been treated by LASAMBUS.
“However, all the occupants of the building have been displaced and might need urgent temporary shelter. The inferno was finally put out at 11:55am,” he said.
The LASEMA boss said that proper investigation would be carried out by security operatives on the incident and advised Lagosians to assist the police with necessary information.
