Eloquent street boy back in the gutter

Just when it seemed as if the opportunity that he so passionately spoke about had finally come his way, street boy Morris Mwenda has been rendered homeless yet again.

Morris captured the attention of the nation late last month with his eloquent speech in an online video that went viral prompting a campaign by Kenyans of goodwill to have him returned to school.

But three weeks after finding refuge courtesy of a charity group by the name Homeless of Nairobi and even meeting Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga, Morris is back on the streets under unclear circumstances.

In a new video posted on Facebook, the youngster claims that he and some of his friends left their new home over what he termed as mistreatment and physical abuse by those who run the facility that is based in Gachie area of Nairobi.

EMPTY PROMISES

“I have been hearing rumors that Morris has been taken in by (Senator) Mike Sonko. Those are just rumours. We want to go back to school but we are uncomfortable where we are living in Gachie,” he says in the undated video shot at night on the streets of Nairobi.

The said facility, that runs a home for former street boys and currently houses about 30 boys, had promised to sponsor Morris and his friends to go back to school and complete their education.

But according to Morris, all that has turned out to be empty promises as the home is yet to fulfill its pledges.

“This is the same Morris you saw meeting the Chief Justice, but I wonder why Morris is now roaming on the streets again,” he said while recounting the alleged hardships that he and his friends have been subjected to at the facility for the homeless.

Efforts by Nairobi News to reach the home for comments on the new development proved futile as calls to contacts persons within the home went unanswered.
