Northern CAN calls for overhaul of security agencies

Against the backdrop of rising cases of kidnapping, Northern Nigeria chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has called for overhauling of Nigerian security agencies.

The religious body lamented that the nation’s security had become so porous that criminals had the got to communicate with families of their victims without being tracked down.

New Chairman of Northern CAN, Reverend Yakubu Pam, stated this while taking over the leadership of the association in Kaduna on Wednesday.

According to Reverend Pam, “I will advise that there should be a total restructuring of our security apparatus to make the security agents more responsive to their responsibilities.

“In the advanced countries, criminals cannot even attempt to call; the security will just pick them up immediately, but unfortunately here, it is even the kidnappers who will pick phone and call you and tell you where to pick your kidnapped loved ones after you have paid them,” he lamented.

On the current economic situation of the country, the Northern CAN Chairman said that the mistakes of the past were responsible for the current challenges.

He, however, tasked the current leadership of Nigeria to look for quick solution to the current hardship ranging from fuel scarcity, power failure and economic crunch.

Earlier, the immediate past Chairman and founding father of Northern CAN, Archbishop Emeritus Jatau said kidnapping and other criminal activities were not in God’s plan for Nigeria, but were caused by wickedness of man.

He charged the new leadership to strive hard to deliver on their assignment.
