How Abdulsalami Abubakar killed my father–MKO’s son

One of the sons of the late winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, has accused former military president Abdulsalami Abubakar, of playing a part in the death of his father.

Jamiu Abiola disclosed this during the 20th anniversary of Kudirat’s death; Abiola’s wife who was murdered by goons acting for another military ruler, Sani Abacha.

Kudirat was assassinated on June 4, 1996, while her husband died in incarceration on July 7, 1998.

Jamiu said it is disheartening that all those who worked against democracy in Nigeria, including Abdulsalami, have today become advisers and heroes of democratic governance. He said if Abacha were still alive, Nigerians would have been hailing him as a hero of democracy as well.

He gave a brief narration of how the former head of state, snuffed the life out of his dad.

“Somebody like the former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, who refused to release the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Abiola) or saw to it that the president died in detention….”

He added, “A day before he (Abiola) died, he complained that he had malaria for more than a month and the government did not attend to him. The president (Abdulsalami) knew he was very sick but he did not do anything (to salvage the situation). At the end of the day, the country’s president-elect – my father – died.”

Saturday’s event was put together by the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy and the Campaign for Democracy.
