Ondo Polls: Setting The Record Straight, By Nasiru Suwaid

When it happened, many amongst us, those critical purveyors in the of recording of history, the individuals tasked with the art of rationalizing and contextualizing multiple events, to explain meanings of what had just occurred; as in opinion-editorial writers, were as confused on what happened on the controversial Ekiti Elections, as the ordinary man on the street.

How could a Kayode Fayemi government, which has been widely trumpeted to be in the vanguard of developing Ekiti state, be defeated by a populist revolt, more so, for a population generally acknowledged as being highly educated, even in relation to their kin in the Yoruba ethnic group, who are the most educationally enlightened in Nigeria..

Surely, such an informed citizenry, an Ekiti kete, could not have gladly substituted educational and infrastructural development, for a bowl of Amala, fraudulently but pejoratively coined stomach infrastructure. Many a literary pundit had spend countless hours, trying to rationalize, comprehend or even understand what had happened.

For some of us, at the very least, in order to keep our sanity, merely situated the election, within the context of a revolt, against an elitist government, that did not know what the poor people want, a narration glowingly but glibly presented to explain President-Elect Donald Trump victory against the President Barack Obama legacy.

However, as later events would reveal, confirm and certify, what happened in Ekiti, far from being a people’s revolution and the celebration of the right of a citizens, to determine who governs them, what actually occurred, was a political hoax, executed by persons and individuals who did not care about the rights of the citizens. Rather, the endgame was an experiment on how to subvert the will of the people, perpetuated by the military, the police, the security services and with funds meant to be used to quell the dangerous insurgency bedeviling the polity.

Most significantly, it was orchestrated by principally, Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who used funds meant to develop his state, to conspire to commit a gargantuan electoral fraud in a nearby state. In fact, for the likes of Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Political Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, one amongst a few, who used journalism to bring about the democracy, we are currently enjoying now. Perhaps, because of the disappointment of what had happened and the belief that ordinary people, could refuse to accept and identify with the politics of development, almost cowardly, he never sought for a re-election.

Little did he know, as we knew now, the political process that brought back the People’s Democratic Party into power in Ekiti State, was a choreographed fraud, organized by higher national authority to install an illegitimate government of Peter Ayodele Fayose. Although, unlike the Holy Bible which has always preached and sermonized about turning the other cheek, however, within the realm and world of politics, whoever used a cane to beat you, it is a sacrilege not to do to them, what they did unto you and, whenever you retaliate, it is a legitimate right to use a rusty iron.

Basically, that is the extent of the Federal Government of Nigeria and most particularly, President Muhammadu Buhari’s (PMB) involvement with Ondo election, not to use state funds to perpetuate electoral fraud, not to use security forces to intimidate voting public, not use the federal might to subvert the electoral process and certainly, not to use the people of Ondo state, in a nebulous experiment about tasting his popularity for a far-off 2019 presidential elections.

Rather, it is a legitimate political aspiration, for any citizen of the South West of Nigeria, to seek unto his brother’s in Ondo state, what he wished for himself, which is the politics of development, surely, that could not be wrong.

Regarding the erroneous charge about a surreptitious plot to divide the south western states and whittle down the influence of the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT), was it not General Muhammadu Buhari (GMB) [as he then was], who first proclaimed the Jagaban of Borgu as the; ‘new bearing’ in the of the south west, pointing the direction of the politics of the region.

In fact, when he announced him as a regional compass of the Yorubas, many in the Afenifere and the current crowd seeking to sow misunderstanding between the two individuals, rejected any attempt to compare a Tinubu with an Obafemi Awolowo, they chortled in a chorus, how could anyone, equate a corrupt politician with the late sage.

Yet, now it is President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB), who is trying to divide the region and reduce the political influence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT). It just doesn’t make sense, to empower somebody and later, undermine him, when the two individuals share the same political vision and progressive ideal of developing Nigeria and guiding it, into a prosperous and great nation.
