The National Universities Commission (NUC) has on Wednesday, recognised the Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, as the 139th university in the country.
The development is coming as part of efforts to create more admission opportunities for qualified students seeking tertiary education in Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Julius Okogie, presented a letter of recognition to the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Wednesday.
Prof Okogie also decried the increasing friction between communities and persons striving to bring tertiary education closer to the people.
The Ondo State Governor accompanied by visitors to the new university, said the aim of establishing a University of Medical Sciences is to ensure Nigeria becomes a medical tourism destination.
