Protest in Rivers State

About 2,000 youths brandishing placards have taken to the streets of Port Harcourt to protest alleged plan by Governor Nyesom Wike to dissolve the elected council executives in the 22 local government areas of the state sworn in by former governor Chibuike Amaechi on May 25 before he bowed out on May 29.

At press time the protesters had barricaded the ever busy Moscow road leading to the Rivers State House of Assembly in the capital city.

Vehicles were being turned back because of the blockade mounted by the protesters on the road

Chairman, Degema local government area, Mr Sogbeye Eli, who is among the Council Chairmen leading the protest said they were out to resist what he dubbed attempt to dissolve elected councils in the state using the State House of Assembly.

It would be recalled that Governor Wike on Monday evening dissolved the Professor Augustine Ahiazu-led Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) that conducted the council election on May 23 over allegations of abuse of office.

It is not clear if the House could be convened today with the development in front of the complex.

Some police officers were seen talking with some of the council chairmen leading the protest.
