A Federal High Court in Enugu has sentenced two drug traffickers, Okafor Chidinma and Iheme Onyemauchechukwu, to forty and fifteen years in prison, respectively, for drug trafficking.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), stated this in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Ofoyeju Mitchell, obtained by the Street Journal on Tuesday morning.

It said the trial judge, Justice D.V. Agishi, sentenced the two convicts who were arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu after finding them guilty of the crime filed against them as charged.

Chidinma, a female professional dancer, was charged for conspiracy, trafficking and unlawful possession of 3.450kg of amphetamine, while Onyemauchechukwu, a male, was charged with trafficking and unlawful importation of 9.975kg of heroin.

Chidinma, it said, was convicted as charged and sentenced to 10 years each in count one and count two, and 20 years in count three, making it a total of 40 years.

Onyemauchechukwu was charged with trafficking and unlawful importation of 9.975kg of heroin and was convicted as charged and sentenced to ten years in count one and a fine of N1million naira and five years in count two with a fine of N500,000.

“While this punishment is expected to correct the convicts, it will equally help to deter others from getting involved in drug trafficking.

“The Agency commits huge resources in drug investigation, arrests and prosecution; judgment like this will further lend credence to the nation’s anti-drug campaign,” the statement quoted NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, as saying.
