“Since she does not want to be my wife, she must go back to the village where I married her from.” – Husband tells court

One Mrs Onyime Ekannem, yesterday asked an Ojo Customary Court sitting in Lagos to stop her husband, Ini-Obong from sending her back to the village because she instituted a divorce suite against him.

She said, “I brought my husband, a firefighter with the government to this court because he has become unfaithful to our marriage. He commits adultery without any remorse, and has no care for his family.

“He has even asked his office to eject me from the house in their official quarters, claiming that since I want to divorce him, I must leave his house.”

Ekannem told the court that her husband is insisting on taking her back to the village since he married her properly from there three years ago, if she insists on the dissolution of the union.

She further appealed to the court for protection as her life was no longer safe, adding that she did not reply the husband, whom she said has failed in his role as a father and husband.

Responding to the claims by his wife, Obong said he must send her back to the village where he properly married her from.

Obong stated, “Since she does not want to be my wife, she must go back to the village where I married her from.”

The President of the court, Chief Joseph Ogunmola, asked Obong to go and take proper care of the two children, adding that he should pay their school fees and feeding allowance.

Ogunmola further ordered that he gets an apartment for the wife if he insists on sending her out of his house, adding that the family of the woman must appear before the court to consent to Ekannem’s return to the village.

The President of the court, adjourned the case to Aug. 3 for further hearing.
