Security operatives within the premises of Government House, over the weekend arrested a driver in the convoy of Governor Adams Oshiomhole over his alleged attempts to break into the account section of Edo State Government House.
It was learnt that there was large lodgement of cash onWednesday evening probably meant offset some expenses towards the Sallah festival.
The attempt was said to have been foiled Friday night by eagle-eyed security operatives.
It was learnt that security operatives in Government House were on routine check when they noticed someone cutting off protectors in the account office.
On sighting the operatives, the suspected thief tried to escape but unknown to him, he had already been identified by the security men who followed him up and apprehended him.
He was promptly handed over to police at the Aideyan Police Station in Benin.
Disclosing how the incident happened, a top security source in Government House said: “policemen were going on routine duty and noticed somebody attempting to break into the account office and foiled the attempt.I am very proud of my men”, the source said, adding that a discreet investigation would be carried out to ascertain whether the driver acted alone or in concert with others.
When contacted, Edo State Police Command spokesman, DSP Stephen Onwuchei confirmed that “there was a report of such nature” which is “at investigation level”.
He added that “the commissioner of police has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department(CID) to take over the investigation.
“As I speak with you, the DC State CID should be in Government House to visit the scene of crime”, Onwuchei said.
