When the President Kenyatta took over power in 2013, the Kenyan youths were hopeful that their tribulations could end. Nearly two and a half years later, Kenyans are yet to enjoy the manna that was promised to them. In fact, year on, the going is getting tougher. Besides Uhuru’s promises, what worries me now is the miasma of his reign which keeps lingering in the minds of poor Kenyans.
Truth be spoken, of the four presidents Kenya has had, Uhuru Kenyatta is the weakest. Come 2017 during his exit, the son of Mt. Kenya is likely to leave behind unworthy footprints on the sands of time which may emasculate the noble political ambition of the future generations. Uhuru’s heartily ineptness in leadership discourages the young men and women who wish to take a shot at the presidency in future.
Opportunity, I am told, comes but once in a lifetime. The Pokot, the Turkana and, the Marakwet communities thought they found in Uhuru a deliverer and a savior from the many years of neglect and marginalization. Unfortunately, all is in vain now. Kenyatta’s conduct and art in the last two and a half years make it imperative for those hopeless Kenyans to look for another messiah.
Uhuru is a gained and lost opportunity. He failed to acquit himself in the true character of a Mt. Kenya scion which has a torrent of shining examples in the likes of Josiah Mwangi Kariuki and Wangari Maathai. Let me say here that President Kenyatta’s inglorious reign is at best an exception rather than the sterner stuff that Mt. Kenyans are made of.
Uhuru has brought darkness rather than light, sickness rather than health, bad governance rather than good governance, hunger rather than abundance, and unemployment rather than job opportunities.
Nobody needs to ask how Uhuru will be remembered. He met us high but will leave us dry. Some of Uhuru’s ‘laudable achievements’ include but not limited to the fact that he met the national debt at 53.5% of GDP but he’s likely to leave it at over 65% of GDP.
Before Kenyatta took over at the helm of affairs, unemployment rate was about 26.7% but so far, it has astronomically shot to 46.8% under Kenyatta’s watch. The Ksh/US$ rate before UK was Ksh80, but so far it has hit Ksh100 mark down from Ksh106 in 2014. Poverty level before UK was 39%, today, it over 50%. Recurrent expenditure before UK was 48%, today it is 72% with over Ksh600b deficit 2015 budget.
Besides, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) commonly known as petrol was Ksh87 per liter when Uhuru took over. Today, the official price of petrol is over Ksh120 is some parts of the country. This man met the nation’s electricity generating capacity at 1,700 megawatts in 2013. Most likely, our generating capacity will be below 1000 megawatts with over Ksh100b in tax payer’s money squandered with impunity.
President Kenyatta the country at peace, but he’ll be leaving it steeply divided along ethnic and religious cleavages and in deep insecurity crisis. He met our economy at its shining best but so far, so worse, if remedial measures are not taken, he’ll be leaving it hazy and parlous. So far, Uhuru is firmly in the lead of the weakest presidents in the world.
