Court remands businessman over production of fake cough syrup

A businessman, one Sylvanus Nwanoro, was Tuesday remanded in Ikoyi prison for production of fake drugs.

The accused of 5, Ekeh Macaulay Street, Iba, is standing trial on a five-count charge bordering on the alleged offence.

The prosecutor, Mr Shamaki Umar told the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos that the accused committed the offence on September 29.

According to the prosecutor, the accused was arrested in Okokomaiko in Lagos, for allegedly adulterating the drug: COF ‘N’ COLD with Codeine syrup, adding that the accused was engaged in counterfeiting the cough syrup with codeine, and distributing same to the public.

Umar added that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 1 (a), 3, 3 (1) (a) and 18 (a) of the Miscellaneous Offence Act, Cap C34, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

Nwanoro however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Justice Ibrahim Buba, following an oral application for bail by defence counsel, Mr. F.S. Oladele, granted the accused bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum.

Buba ordered the accused to be remanded at the Ikoyi prisons pending the perfection of his bail conditions and adjourned the case to January 28, 2016 for mention.
