Nigeria's former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, during a round-table discussion organized by Nextier Advisory, themed “Nigeria and the Biafra Agitation”, made some comments which didn't sit well with pro-biafra agitators and Igbo leaders in the country.
According to Obasanjo:
- Biafra agitation is born in error, ignorance and frustration.
- Igbo leaders have nothing to gain from the agitation and should call the rampaging youths to order. If the elders abdicate their responsibility to the immaturity, inadequate experience, unrealistic idealism and the frustration of the young, it will no doubt lead to disaster, he said.
- The current agitation as more of a cry for attention, amelioration and improvement of socio-economic conditions and situations, especially those in the South-East.
- Biafra agitation is dead. It is a hopeless and futile exercise of which nobody should embark on.
- Biafra agitation is as an industry; a means of making money.
- Issuance of the sold-called Biafran passport takes one nowhere
The leaders have lashed back - Obasanjo is talking nonsense, they say.
