How Zimbabwe celebrated its independence in 1980 with a memorable Bob Marley concert

On this day in 1980, Southern-Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe gained its independence from Britain.

To celebrate the incredible milestone and liberation after decades of colonization, oppression and segregation, legendary Jamaican reggae musician Bob Marley was invited to perform at a concert. The event took place at the Rufaro Stadium in Harare with the venue filled to capacity. Marley even agreed to play at the same venue the next day much to the excitement of those who could not attend.

The late reggae icon apparently rejected a performance fee and footed his travelling expenses. Prior to their independence, the “redemption song” singer composed a song titled “Zimbabwe” which he dedicated to the freedom fighters pushing for the country’s independence.

As Zimbabwe celebrates its independence today, join Face2Face Africa as we go in back in time to watch this historic performance. Were you fortunate enough to witness this memorable event? Share with us your experience.
