Muslim Women: Switzerland to ban facial coverings
Saturday, 16 September 2017 03:44 Written by NAN(Reuters/NAN) Switzerland could become the latest country to ban facial coverings worn by some Muslim women after activists collected more than 100,000 signatures required to put the proposal to a national vote.
The group, called “Yes to a Mask Ban” delivered the petition on Friday, setting up a vote by 2020.
Some of its leaders also spearheaded the 2009 Swiss ban on new minarets being built in the country.
A delegation of leaders from the group delivered three boxes containing 106,600 signatures to the federal chancellery, part of the Swiss parliament building in Bern.
Full-face coverings such as niqabs and burqas are a polarising issue across Europe, with some arguing that they symbolise discrimination against women and should be outlawed.
The clothing has already been banned in France.
“Facial coverings are a symbol of radical Islam that have nothing to do with religious freedom but are rather an expression of the oppression of women,’’ said Anian Liebrand, a Swiss campaign leader.
“In Switzerland, we show our faces when we talk to each other.’’
Others contended that bans unnecessarily intrude on religious freedom.
“How many people wear these burqas in Switzerland?’’ said Oender Gueneş, a spokesperson for the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Switzerland, which represents more than 200 mosques,’’ he said.
Walter Wobmann (R), National Councillor and Co-President committee for “Yes to a Mask Ban’’ (Ja zum Verhuellungsverbot), speaks next to Jean-Luc Addor, National Councillor, in front of boxes containing more than 100,000 signatures collected.
These signatures are required to put the proposal of a ban on facial coverings worn by some Muslim women to a national vote, at the Federal Chancellery in Bern, Switzerland.
“You can probably count those living in Switzerland on maybe one or two hands. The rest are usually rich tourists from the Gulf, two thirds of Switzerland’s 8.4 million residents are Christians.
But its Muslim population has risen to 5 per cent, largely because of immigrants from former Yugoslavia.
“One Swiss canton, Italian-speaking Ticino, already has a similar ban.
“At least two demonstrators who wore veils in defiance after the ban came into effect in July 2016 and paid fines of 260 dollars,’’ Swiss media have reported.
The Switzerland-wide initiative foresees parliament deciding on penalties.
Though the measure would also forbid protesters from concealing their faces during demonstrations, the main focus has been on burqas.
France’s ban was upheld in 2014 by the European Court of Human Rights.
This year Germany’s parliament backed a ban on full-face veils for civil servants, judges and soldiers, while Austria and the Netherlands have also debated the issue.
With signatures in hand, leaders of the Swiss initiative expect three years of wrangling in Switzerland’s system of direct democracy before voters get the chance to register their view.
Liebrand is optimistic his initiative’s path would mirror the progress of the 2009 minaret ban.
“The minaret campaign started as underdogs and was something the big parties didn’t want, but I reckon the facial coverings ban will also resonate with the people,’’ he said.
Group urges Britain to revoke IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s citizenship
Friday, 15 September 2017 20:54 Written by nigerianeye A United Kingdom-based civil society organisation, Citizens United for Peace and Stability, said on Friday it has started gathering facts about the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, intending to ask the UK Government to revoke his British citizenship.
Kanu is a dual citizen of the UK and Nigeria.
According to the Convener of CUPS, Dr. Idris Ahmed, the move seeking the revocation of Kanu’s British citizenship was connected to alleged acts of “terrorism perpetrated by IPOB, including the recent attacks on Northerners living in the Southeast.”
In several Facebook posts on Friday, Ahmed said, “Beyond any doubt, IPOB is a terrorist organisation. I have watched so many video clips on Facebook in which Nnamdi Kanu talked about mobilising weapons and financial resources to wage war against the Nigerian State.
“The CUPS organisation has started compiling evidence to pass to the British Government to strip Nnamdi Kanu of his UK citizenship.
“Under a new law, over 100 UK citizens who went overseas to commit acts of terrorism or fight for ISIS have been stripped of their citizenship by the Home Secretary (Minister of Internal Affairs).
“Nnamdi Kanu perfectly falls into this category.”
Boy is Rescued After Being Tied to a Tree by Granddad for 5 Years
Thursday, 24 August 2017 13:29 Written by thesun.co..ukTHIS is the moment a little boy’s shocking nightmare comes to an end as he was rescued after being tied up alongside cattle for five years.
Umesh, eight, is visually impaired and mentally disabled, but as if this was not bad enough he was also bound by his grandma because he was naughty.
Both his dad Bhagawati Lal and mum Manu Devi, died of the HIV five years ago and Umesh went to live with his grandparents in Udaipur, in Rajasthan.
But gran Peepi Bai, 75, allegedly decided to keep him tied with a rope in the cow stable because the little lad is violent and used to run away.
She said: "Umesh was a normal child till he was three.
"But after his parents died he started behaving differently.
"We don’t earn enough money to get him treatment."
Mrs Bai added: "He's sometimes violent and leaves home without anyone knowing.
"We are old and cannot run around looking for him.
"And so we have to keep him tied up."
Elsewhere in the same city, Jiva Ram, 11, from Baydi village in Udaipur, also suffered from polio and mental breakdowns.
He was tied to a tree outside his house by his dad Hurma Ram, 35, a farmer, before he went out to work in his farm.
He said: "He had harmed himself in the past. To avoid any problems we had to keep him tied."
Both the boys are now free and been taken to a shelter home.
Bhojraj Singh, Aasra Vikas Sansthan child welfare charity founder, said he was shocked to find them tied to a tree like animals.
He said: "It was heartbreaking.
"We were shocked to see the condition in which both children were found.
"Javi was found naked while one of his legs was tied to a tree, whereas Umesh was tied to a bamboo pole, among the cattle.
"Both the boys have been shifted to a shelter home where they will be taken good care of.
"We shall start their treatment and help them grow into good human beings."
Police rescue man with both hands nailed to a tree [VIDEO]
Thursday, 10 August 2017 11:53 Written by dailypost.ngThe US Police have rescued a man named Jose Duran whose two hands were nailed to a tree in the forest area of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
According to Breitbart News website, a city worker (who preferred not be named) discovered Duran with both hands nailed to a tree and screaming for help.
Breitbart further reports that a police officer who followed the city worker to the forest finally found Duran nailed to a tree, still conscious, breathing, and groaning in pain.
The officer immediately called for paramedic rescue.
However, Duran initially refused to tell the officer his name but finally gave some details about how he ended up there.
Duran later took journalists to the exact same spot where more than a dozen first responders worked to set him free.
Police have however said they didn’t suspect this was a payback for crime or a cartel-related punishment.
It said Duran does not have a criminal record, but he did have a long-running court battle over a real estate issue.

Friday, 04 August 2017 02:44 Written by tori.ng£10million scam: Kayode Sanni goes to in jail in London
Saturday, 08 July 2017 20:05 Written by dailypost.ngKayode Sanni, Nigerian illegal immigrant who used the identities of member of parliament, judges and police officers during a £10million scam has been sent to five years in jail.
The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales (Old Bailey) found him guilty of leading a gang which used fake identities to swindle the taxpayer hard earned money.
Adedamola Oyebode, 30, who worked as CSSC events manager, stole the details which he then handed over to her brothers-in-law Oluwatobe Emmanuel Odeyemi, 34, and Oluwagbenga Stephen Odeyemi, 39.
According to Daily Mail report, The Odeyemi brothers ran the fraud with Sanni.
The jurors said Sanni “lied through his teeth” after he claimed that his “conscience is clear” and denied involvement in the scam.
The fraud was perpetrated between 10 March 2009 and 11 June 2013.
Emmanuel Odeyemi, Chantelle Gumbs and Adedamole Oyebode had earlier pleaded guilty to fraud charges.
Judge Paul Dodgson described the offence as a serious fraud.
Sanni expressed remorse for the scam in a letter following his conviction but Dodgson was not impressed.
He said:”I think he is remorseful that he got caught. I’m sorry, I just can’t regard that as sincere. I can’t see how someone who contested the matter, who in the jury’s judgement, and in mine as well, just blatantly lied throughout and then claimed to be remorseful”.
Oyebode, who worked for the CSSC between August 2008 and August 2010, admitted supplying lists of members and their details in return for payment. She also made calls to the tax credit helpline to obtain application packs.
Further investigation revealed the fraudsters had used the details to create false identities, buy online insurance and open false bank accounts to receive the cash.
The profits of the scam were then transferred out into either their own accounts or through Western Union facilities set up by Sanni and Emmanuel Odeyemi.
Jurors were told that two of the gang, Stephen Odeyemi and his wife Oluwatumininu Banjo, 40, had fled to Nigeria and are wanted abroad.

“He swerved right round me and then hit about five or six people. He hit about two people in front of me and then three behind.
“I’d say there are about four severely injured people.
“They all have paramedics assisting them at the moment.”
A Downing Street spokesman said: “The Prime Minister is in contact with officials and is being regularly updated on the incident at London Bridge.”
One man at the scene tweeted tonight: “Horrific scene at London Bridge… bodies strewn over the pavement. B&Q van mounted the pavement.”
