Politicians behind current violence, instability in Nigeria – Ex-Nigerian envoy, Onochie

Former Nigerian Ambassador to Algeria and Philippines and Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Nnamdi Onochie, has blamed the undemocratic activities of the political class, for the current political violence and instability in Nigeria.

Onochie also attributed the current gale of defections among politicians belonging to major dominant political parties in the nation to the present heightened instability in Nigeria.

He further regretted the alleged failure of lawmakers at the National Assembly to enact a law disqualifying sitting political office holders from cross carpeting from one political party to another, insisting that, this common and undemocratic practice among the political actors, calls for question on the electoral suitability of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria.

Onochie, who recently declares interest to vie for the 2023 presidential seat of Nigeria, made his position known in a statement, made available to DAILY POST on Friday, added that inequality, lack of fairness and the conundrum of ethnicity, religion, nepotism and favoritism built in the current Nigeria setting, have become major clogs in the wheel of progress and development of the nation.

The presidential hopeful, however, disclosed that he would restructure Nigeria, unite all people of the nation and preserve the national ethos, and as well as convene a Truth, Peace and Reconciliation Conference and creates a people’s constitution, and jettison the military imposed 1999 constitution if emerge as the President of the country.

The ex-Nigerian envoy to Algeria, also stated his administration shall combat insecurity through forceful negotiations to end Boko Haram atrocities, Sahel inspired banditry and religion based violence if opportune to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Onochie further used the medium to harp on the collective need, cooperation and efforts of all genuine and patriotic citizens in order to chart the best and appropriate solutions to the myriad of challenges and structural imbalance threatening the unity and co-existence of Nigeria and her people.

His statement read, “the signs of confusion and political parties’ disarray is already clear as the 2022 Year of Special Conventions approach. Fever-heat defections to other political parties have been heightened, while permutations on convenience and benefits of remaining politically stable or loyal count for nothing. Disarray in the parties have become the precursor to political violence and instability.

“The legal instruments for controlling such aberrations of conduct are completely absent. It calls into question the electoral suitability of our 1999 Constitution, including the Amendments to it. There is certainly agreement today about the imperfections of the Constitution of 1999. What is my position as a 2023 PDP Presidential Aspirant?

“We will redeem Nigeria through zero corruption and using IT-whistle blowing, to eliminate the malaise and to rapidly prosecute accused persons based on the Rule of Law, and equally zero foreign loans and using Treasury forex for critical raw materials imports and development of infrastructure, and using only domestic funds.”
