The immediate past senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Smart Adeyemi, has stated the reasons why many of his supporters decamped to the APC as the state's governorship election approached.
Mr. Adeyemi said the movement from the PDP to the APC, just before the election, was disturbing to the PDP, whose candidate, Idris Wada, wants to retain power for the next for years.
“About three quarters of my supporters left for the APC and they told me that they were leaving because the PDP could no longer protect their interest and aspirations,” he explained.
“I don’t share their view, but there is nothing I can do to stop them because we are in a democratic setting and people are free to make their choices and associate with who they want to.”
“Whether their defection will have impact on the outcome of the election can only show in the results when declared,” Mr. Adeyemi said.
He added that he remains a staunch supporter of the PDP and has no plans to defect.
The senator is still contesting his defeat at the Appeal Court after the tribunal failed to uphold his petition.
