Designer of Nigeria?s flag Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi dies at 87

The designer of the Nigerian flag Pa. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi has died at the age of 87.

According to his family, Akinkunmi passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, August 29, after a brief illness

One of his children announced his death on Facebook.

“Life is indeed transient; I can say boldly that you live a life with a landmark. Continue to rest, my father! Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R.): Great Man has gone.”

Born on May 10, 1936, the late Pa Akinwunmi attended Baptist Day Secondary School, Ibadan for his Primary education and Ibadan Grammar School, Ibadan for his Secondary education. He started his career as a Civil Servant at the Secretariat of Ibadan and later travelled overseas to study Agricultural Engineering at Norway Technical College.

In 1958, during his stay abroad, Akinkunmi stumbled upon an advertisement in a national daily calling for the submission of designs for the Nigeria’s national flag in view of Nigeria’s imminent Independence from British governance. His entry was adjudged the best among the roughly 2,000 entries submitted.

The original design of the flag featured a white band flanked by two green ones and a red sun with streaming rays was located on the white band. The sun was eventually done away with by the overseeing committee to produce the present design.

Akinkunmi’s design was selected because of its ingenuity and profundity (the green bands represent the forests and abundant natural wealth of the country, while the white band represents peace). The flag was officially hoisted on Independence Day (October 1, 1960) instead of the British Union Jack.

Akinkunmi was awarded 100 pounds by the government when his design was selected. He has also been honoured with the MON (Member of the Order of the Niger) Award by President Goodluck Jonathan.

May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

In these parts, public office comes with boisterous carnivals, elevated expectations, thrills, and frills. The exigency, delicacy and sensitivity of this office is sometimes lost in bouts of revelries and in the pursuit of temporal nothings. It is an office where a few have made a good name for themselves; it is also a station where a multitude have come tumbling down from grace.

Every administration since 1999 seems to have its own heroes and villains – depending on the leanings or dialectical disposition of the objurgator, disputant or interrogator. The classing of heroes and villains on disparate sides is in the conviction or view of the opinion-holder. One man’s hero is another’s villain; and the other’s villain is another’s hero.

Diezani Alison-Madueke, former minister of petroleum resources under the Jonathan administration, is often held as a villain of that administration. But some people may not agree. In fact, there have been protests by some groups against her prosecution by the EFCC. Here, the voltage of outrage towards any alleged offence by a public officer is measured in ethnic and religious volts. Offences are ethnicised according to the bearings of the alleged offender.

The EFCC alleged that the former minister of petroleum resources pilfered over $153 million; bought N14 billion worth of jewellery and acquired over 90 properties in Nigeria. The agency was able to successfully secure forfeiture orders against some of the properties but was not able to bring her to trial in Nigeria.

On Tuesday, the UK National Crime Agency said it had charged Diezani to court for fraud. The NCA said Diezani is suspected to have accepted bribes during her time as minister for petroleum resources, in exchange for awarding multi-million pound oil and gas contracts. The NCA alleged she benefitted from at least £100,000 in cash, chauffeur driven cars, flights on private jets, luxury holidays for her family, and the use of multiple London properties.

According to the agency, her charges also detail financial rewards including furniture, renovation work and staff for the properties, payment of private school fees, and gifts from high-end designer shops such as Cartier jewellery and Louis Vuitton goods.

Andy Kelly, Head of the NCA’s International Corruption Unit (ICU), said: “We suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her power in Nigeria and accepted financial rewards for awarding multi-million pound contracts. These charges are a milestone in what has been a thorough and complex international investigation. Bribery is a pervasive form of corruption, which enables serious criminality and can have devastating consequences for developing countries. We will continue to work with partners here and overseas to tackle the threat.”

It is, perhaps, Diezani’s long date with destiny.

Abuse of power. This is the cardinal malfeasance of Diezani as alleged by the NCA. The ingredients for abuse of power are always abundantly available. Just one act of indiscretion or indiscipline, and a public officer plunges into the whirlpool of eternal opprobrium.

But where are other former senior government officials accused of similar offences? There will always be the principal villain in any story. So, it is pertinent that public officers take heed lest they become the guilt-sponge of any administration.

Abuse of power. Abuse of office. This is a slippery slope where many public officers fall.

Godwin Emefiele, suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, is accused of abusing his power as the head of the apex bank by veering into politics. Although Emefiele denied that he intended to contest for the 2023 presidential ticket, the undertow of his resolve was obvious.

Emefiele’s ‘’naira-confiscation policy’’ in the build-up to the elections has been alleged to be a political gambit. Citizens and businesses endured untold hardship and suffering owing to that policy.

In February, the DSS filed charges bordering on terrorism financing against him. In June, he was taken into custody and charged to court in July. Fresh charges have now been brought against him. The charges border largely on abuse of office.

But was Emefiele working alone? Was he pulling the strings all by himself? Where are those whose bidding he was doing? Where are those he was working with? Where are those he was working for. Emefiele’s torment should be a cautionary example for everyone.

It is important for public officers to be wary and maintain the highest level of discipline and integrity, recognising the fact that they could become the principal villain or the repository of the sins of any administration. Any wrongdoing could culminate into becoming the cynosure for the misdeeds or perceived transgressions of any administration.

The rise and fall of public officers should be a piercing lesson to other public officers and to those intending. Today, it is Emefiele in bastille; tomorrow, it could be anyone.

The despot went on to add that his former-chef-turned-number-one-enemy was a 'talented businessman' and that the Kremlin would be launching a 'preliminary investigation' into the tragedy.

While he spoke in the past tense, and paid tribute to the 62-year-old warlord, he fell short of officially confirming Prigozhin's death.

It still remains unclear exactly what happened to the jet that fell from the sky and burst into flames yesterday afternoon but US officials now believe it had been caused a surface-to-air missile.

Washington insiders, who spoke only on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the matter, stressed that the information was still preliminary and under review.

Their assessment contradicts that of several independent Russian outlets, who argued the explosion was likely caused by a bomb placed on board.

Putin has now allegedly ordered a probe by the country's Investigative Committee, who have been reporting to him following the smash.

He said that the team had begun a 'preliminary investigation of this incident, and it will be conducted fully and completed' shortly.

The Kremlin remained silent on the tragedy for almost 24 hours, other than a notification from the Russian aviation authority, who claimed Prigozhin and his co-founder had been passengers on board the flight.

Finally speaking out over the aircraft crash, Putin said this afternoon: 'What concerns this air crash, first of all, I want to express sincere condolences to the families of all those who died.

'It is always a tragedy. Indeed, if they were there and, according to the initial information, Wagner Company employees were on board, I want to note that those people made a significant contribution to our common cause of fighting the Nazi regime in Ukraine.

'We remember this, we know this and we will not forget this.'

Putin has often made claims of the presence of neo-Nazis in Ukraine as a way to justify his horrendous war - but these theories have been debunked.

In his address he added: 'I had known Prigozhin for a very long time, since the start of the '90s.

'He was a man with a difficult fate, and he made serious mistakes in life. And he strove for the results he needed for himself, and when I asked him about it, for the common cause, as in these last months.

For much of the day, it appeared as though Putin would once again turn a blind eye to Prigozhins death.

This morning, while addressing leaders at the BRICS summit, he avoided the matter.

Instead, the Russian leader spent time congratulating South African president Cyril Ramaphosa on the announcement that six countries - including Iran and Saudi Arabia - will join the economic alliance next year.

Similarly, as news broke last night, there was no mention of the fatalities.

Instead, he soaked up adulation at a concert celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's Second World War victory at the Battle of Kursk.

A clip showed the moment the despot greeted a raucous crowd who screamed 'we are with you, we love you', before a woman dressed in a pink jacket cried: 'Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin], my favourite,' and planted an enthusiastic kiss on his face.

A day has now passed since the incident but questions still remain over what truly happened to the flight fell from the sky into a field in the Bologovsky district in the Tver region, 60 miles north of Moscow, before bursting into flames.

Russian outlet Baza, publishing schematics of the plane, pointed to a service compartment near the bathroom in the tail section of the aircraft behind the wings represented an ideal place to conceal a bomb.

It contended the theories that Prigozhin's Embraer Legacy 600 jet was shot down by an air defence missile are likely false, pointing out there were no visible rocket contrails or exhaust plumes in the skies around the crash site.

And eyewitnesses from the town of Kuzhenkino close to the location of the crash said they saw the jet explode in the sky before tumbling to the earth, but did not report any missile strike.

Kuzhenkino resident Anastasia Bukharova, 27, said she was walking with her children Wednesday when she saw the jet, 'and then - boom! - it exploded in the sky and began to fall down.'

'Something sort of was torn from it in the air, and it began to go down.'

Stewardess Kristina Raspopova, who perished in the crash, told family prior to takeoff from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport that the flight had been delayed due to a technical inspection and unspecified repairs, according to several independent Russian outlets.

It comes as several Russian sources claimed Prigozhin's usual pilot - Artem Stepanov - was on holiday in a remote region of Russia and was uncontactable prior to yesterday's incident.

But the plane's pilot and captain Aleksei Levshin, who also died in the crash along with co-pilot Rustam Karimov, had also worked with Prigozhin for many years, his daughter told Russian media.

Meanwhile, Russian media outlet rucriminal.info - a site that seeks to expose the corruption and underhand tactics utilised by Moscow's elite - claimed that Prigozhin's plane was delayed before takeoff for 'technical inspections', adding to speculation the aircraft was targeted by a bomb.

UK intelligence sources told the earlier today BBC they had reason to suspect Russia's domestic security service, the FSB, was behind the plane crash.

But Prigozhin's death has not yet been officially confirmed, leading to speculation the Wagner chief may still be alive.

Wagner Group mercenaries are now gearing up for 'full mobilisation' amid news Prigozhin, as well as Wagner co-founder Dmitry Utkin, were killed in the plane crash.

Russian outlet Readovka, closely linked with Prigozhin, reported that the private military company had a 'long-established approved mechanism of action in the event of the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin or Dmitry Utkin'.

A source confirmed: 'In the event of Prigozhin's death, there is a mechanism for ''full mobilisation'' – regardless of who was at fault for his death.'

The extent to which Wagner mercenaries will react to the death of their leader remains to be seen.

  • A lady has called out the OPM pastor, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere as she exposes their escapades.
  • She alleged that the Apostle engaged in unprotected intercourse with her multiple times which resulted in pregnancy.
  • She further claimed that he offered her N10 million to maintain silence about their relationship.

A lady has accused the Omega Power Ministries General Overseer, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere of having a sexual relationship with her which led to pregnancy.

The woman who boldly spoke in a video noted that her escapade with the pastor occurred when she was living in his house.

According to her, Apostle Chibuzor slept with her multiple times without condoms despite knowing she was engaged and she eventually got pregnant.

She added that the clergyman offered her the sum of N10M to keep their relationship secret.

The lady claimed that Apostle Chibuzor threatened to kick her out of his house and do harm to her if she turned down his sexual advances, and after much persuasion, she gave in.

This comes days after Happie Boys also revealed some alleged dirty deeds of Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere.

Taking to Instagram, the boys shared screenshots of a certain Facebook user threatening to arrest Apostle Chibuzor for allegedly molesting young girls.

Happie Boys further shared an alleged voice note of the pastor’s convo with the 14-year-old girl he impregnated as he spoke on how he would exonerate himself if she chooses to expose him.

According to Happie Boys, the 14-year-old girl isn’t the only girl he has impregnated. A lot of girls have kids from the pastor and he’s hiding them from the public.

Captioning the post, Happie Boys wrote:

“To the public saying we did something bad or lied about the OPM pastor.. well we are among the victims of the said pastor who disguises like he is helping but ruining lives of young boys and girls.. just imagine underaged girls pregnant for a pastor and that’s minus the many girls who have kids for him. Many are in cypris here, I still saw one of them yesterday! Most of you will say we’re still kids.. This real life, be realistic and stop being judgemental.. Thank God for God, His vindicating his children.. May God have mercy on you Apostle…”

The father of five debunked reports that he is the father of her child, stating that Queen Dami, was only a fan before the death of her husband, the King.

Queen Dami’s marriage to the late Alaafin crashes

Recall that Queen Dami was married to the late monarch but the marriage crashed after she allegedly broke a palace rule.

According to reports, the Queen was locked up in a cell after allegedly going against a palace rule, an act that prompted her to leave her marriage and run away from the palace for Lagos on April 2021.

She later blamed the whole act on frustration and wrong advice from friends. Unfortunately, her relationship with the monarch was never repaired before his demise last year.

Russia has issued a warning to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) over planned military intervention in the ongoing political tension in Niger Republic.

Russia warned that such action could escalate the crisis.

Leaders of ECOWAS member states on Thursday, resolved to deploy a “standby force” in a bid to restore constitutional democracy to Niger and reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

ECOWAS chairperson, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, made it clear that “no option is off the table, including the use of force as a last resort.”

Russia, however, says a military solution could lead to a “protracted confrontation”.

“We believe that a military solution to the crisis in Niger could lead to a protracted confrontation in that African country, and to a sharp destabilisation of the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region as a whole,” the Russian foreign ministry said.

Russia has not formally backed the coup leaders.

Abia State government has placed a 106-year-old Akara seller, Ma Chidinma Eluwa, on a monthly stipend for her upkeep.

The centenarian who is popular at Owerri road by Isigate area of Umuahia, Abia State capital, is also to have her business boosted by the Abia State government.

Mama Eluwa, who lost her husband some years ago, is also left with just one son still living.

But the challenges of losing her family did not discourage her as she has continued to fry the local delicacy for her teeming customers despite her age.

On July 29th, 2023 the aged trader was spotted at her shop by the Chief of Staff to Abia State governor, Caleb Ajagba.

The Chief of Staff who was returning from an environmental clean-up inspection on behalf of the governor, was attracted by the site of customers that queued up to buy Mama Eluwa’s delicacy.

On enquiry, the Chief of Staff was told that the aged woman had been in the Akara business for donkey years which instantly made the CoS pencil down her name for special government intervention, after having some interactions with her.

The Chief of Staff on return to the government house in Umuahia, recommended his special discovery to the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable Groups and Poverty Alleviation, which took over the matter after carrying out more investigations about Mama Eluwa ‘s history in Akara frying business.

On 9th August 2023, Mama Chidinma Eluwa was invited to the office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable Groups and Poverty Alleviation by Mrs Ifeoma Thomas, the Special Assistant who announced some financial interventions and business sustainability plans for her.

She was captured on National Identity Numbers, NIN system for a bank account to be opened for her for easy deposit of monthly stipends for the aged but resilient trader.

The Abia State government is also planning to boost her business through financial support while plans are on to celebrate her next birthday and longevity.

Responding, Mama Chidinma Eluwa thanked Governor Alex Otti, his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba and the Special Assistant on vulnerable groups and poverty alleviation, Mrs Ifeoma Thomas for picking interest in her.

She said that the assistance from the Abia State government would make her live more years on earth.

She advised the youths to shun crime, focus on their education as well as acquire skills to make society better.

Speaking also, the Special Assistant to Abia State governor on vulnerable groups and poverty alleviation, Mrs Ifeoma Thomas said, “We’re going to place her on a monthly stipend and also open a bank account for her. But first of all, we have gotten the Nigerian Identity Management Agency (NIMC) to capture her and her son in the NIMC register, afterwards, we open an account in her name and her brother will be in the custody of the ATM card.

“With that, we will pay her stipend into the account at the end of every month”.

Resident doctors serving at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla, on Wednesday, bemoaned the non-payment of their salaries for three months.

It could be recalled that the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, had earlier fixed today, Wednesday, for a nationwide protest over the issues affecting their members.

However, the protest was called off at midnight following the intervention of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

But in UNTH, Enugu, the doctors say beyond the national issues being pushed by NARD, they have peculiar challenges.

The doctors, who had gathered for the aborted protest, described their current predicament as pitiable and unacceptable.

They said though the national body has called off the protest, the gathering has provided them an opportunity to open up on their predicament.

The doctors said every entreaty to the hospital management has not yielded a positive result.

According to them, many of their members are already sliding into depression, with a good number of them now regular customers to loan apps.

The over 100 affected medical workers, who have been left as locum resident doctors for over two years, say they have run out of patience.

One of the doctors, Dr Nwosu Ivan of the Surgery Department, said the suffering of their members was indescribable.

“The issue about owing locum doctors three months salary in UNTH is very pathetic and I don’t wish that to even my enemies. I want to call on all men of goodwill, our consultants, our CMD and concerned citizens to know that doctors in UNTH are really suffering.

“We know the price of fuel since fuel subsidy was removed, we know the effect on our economy, our purse, the prices of goods have risen to high, the cost of medical treatment for doctors.

“You can imagine the effect on doctors who have not been paid their three months salary; many colleagues of ours have been trekking to work, that is a fact, because they have to park their vehicles; many of them take public transport whereby they spend thousands of naira each day and you see a lot of them showing signs of depression because of pressure from the society.

“Many of the locum doctors are sick but can’t afford their hospital bills; these are professionals, these are civil servants, these are supposed to be the middle class of the society, but they can’t afford basic necessities because they are being owed.

“The work pressure is much on the doctors; one person will run a whole clinic or a whole department for three months, which means being on call for 90 days and these people are meant to do this on empty stomach, they come to work, no food, no money to buy food.

“Doctors are now patronising loan apps to feed their families, it is very shameful. These workers have committed no crime; their mates are abroad but they decided to stay back; we are not asking for much; salary is basic,” Nwosu stated.

Similarly, Dr Christian Omeje of Department of child dental health said it was heartrending that for the past two years, they have remained as locum resident doctors.

According to him, “When we came into the programme, we thought that this locum nomenclature will be erased from our appointment letters within two, three or highest six months, that we will become permanent staff.

“Since I entered into the medical programme I never heard of locum residency. Residency is a time-bound programme, so adding locum to it is making it worse.

“It has been of serious psychological effect on us, answering that word locum has really dampened our spirit and it has affected us. We are also working as doctors and this situation is also affecting the quality of attention we give to our patients.

“We have families to care for and a month will come you will not see salary; not seeing salary for the month of January was the worst of it all, and that was when the story started.

“When we went to strike the other time, management now wrote to us, that by the end of July, this whole issue will be sorted out and our salary will be coming regularly, but we are still where we are.

“July has come and gone and no word from them. It is really unacceptable, a hungry doctor is an angry doctor and an angry doctor is dangerous for a patient.

“We cannot continue to see our patients because we are doing them more harm than good. Apart from salary, we are also being owed hazard allowance for nine months and half.

“Our demand is simple: enrol us on IPPIS, make it a regular residency programme not adding locum to it. UNTH should stop casualising doctors. Pay us outstanding salaries.”

On his part, Dr Ogaranya Ifeanyichukwu said they were living their lives in pain and agony.

“We can’t get Medical Residency Training Fund because of this locum status and to add insult to injury, I am owed three months salary.

“As a surgical resident doctor, my programme is quite tough that I can’t do anything else. Some of us who are still in Nigeria are dying. I ask myself- is it a crime to have stayed back in Nigeria, was my decision a big mistake, should I have gone out, or be prepared to go?

“But if we all go, who will now take care of our sick ones. So some of us decided to stay in the country but we are not well treated,” Ogaranya lamented.

Corroborating what the doctors said, the President, Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, UNTH, Dr Chinazom Ekwueme described the situation as pathetic and embarrassing.

Ekwueme, who was worried over the prolonged locum tag on over 150 resident doctors, urged the management to urgently resolve the issues.

She said, “Imagine as a doctor, you were employed and over two years you move from being a registrar, to being a senior registrar and on your way to becoming a consultant, yet you are still a contract staff, you are not entitled to anything, you are not entitled to Medical Residency Training Fund, you are not entitled to pension deductions. It is unacceptable that medical doctors will be casualised.

“The management keeps telling us there is an embargo on employment, that they can’t get a waiver, but here in our South-East, we all know that other centres surrounding us have employed their own locum staff.

“So, we don’t know why it has been an issue for the past two years. The last time UNTH employed was in 2021, since then, we have not gotten another employment; as at that 2021, we had locum doctors but they were not employed, instead, fresh people were employed.

“The affected doctors are borrowing from colleagues, from corps members who are doctors and all that. It is sad.

“We have the opportunity to join the ‘japa syndrome’ but we said no, yet we are being treated in this manner. It is very unacceptable. In UNTH, we are overburdened.

“We have our own local issues, even if NARD calls off the strike, we cannot guarantee industrial harmony in UNTH.

“This is why we are appealing to the management to resolve these issues so that everyone will be happy.”

Meanwhile, a senior staff of the hospital, who spoke on the development, acknowledged that the doctors were being owed for three months.

He, however, blamed it on shortfall in subvention.
