    Despite several meetings with governor Dapo Abiodun, workers in Ogun State have vowed to continue the indefinite strike until their demands are met.

    The workers, under the auspices of Organized Labour, had on Tuesday, embarked on an indefinite strike demanding the suspension of the state pension reform law.

    They insist that successive governments in the past 17 years have failed to remit contributing pension funds, owing an accumulated contributing pension of N82bn.

    DAILY POST reports that the strike had severely crippled operations and services in state governmental institutions as public schools, courts, and hospitals were under lock and key, leaving both state and local secretariats empty.

    Governor Abiodun, however, in a meeting held with the organized labour to address issues surrounding the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and other sundry matters, assured that his administration would commence the immediate payment for workers who retire from July 2, 2025, through the Contributory Pension Scheme.

    He noted that a 10-year payment plan would start from 2025 to 2030 under the first phase, while the second phase, which would commence next year, would be from 2030 to 2035.

    According to him, under this arrangement, payment would be made for the final two years of his term, while eight years of payment would be for his successors.

    The labour unions despite this, rejected the governor plea, declaring that the industrial action would continue as long as the state government fails to accede to their demands.

    The union, in a letter, signed on Friday by state chairmen and secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) and other 13 affiliates unions, expressed their displeasure with the resolve of the governor in regards the Contributory Pension Scheme.

    The letter reads, “At its emergency meeting held on Friday, i8th July, 2025, the State Organised Labour expresses reservations on the outcome of the parley with the State Government as chaired by the State Governor, His Excellency, Prince ‘ Dapo Autoden, CON.

    “The Thursday, 17th July, 2025 meeting with the State Government delved on the issues: і. Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS: іі. New Minimum Wage, (2024) vis a vis its Consequential Adjustments:

    “Eight years arrears of Leave Allowance;

    “Consequential Adjustments on Pension and v. Promotion of Staff (2023&2024).

    “Council-in-session at the emergency meeting that spanned seven (7) hours, 9:00am-4:00pm, discussed extensively on each of the items listed above with in depth evaluation of the offer(s) of the Ogun State Government on all. However, it is expressly stated that the Council-in-session is displeased with the resolve of the State Government on especially, item (i).

    “In effect, the initial position of the congress subsists and the declared trade dispute as contained in the State Organized Labour letter on Monday, 14th July, 2025 stands.”
