On Monday 16 August 2021, the sight on CNN of an American military aircraft C-17 taxing on the tarmac of Kabul Airport with several Afghans, some hanging, clinging and running alongside for a possible boarding out of the country, is one that will linger for years to come.

Of course, examples abound of such historic and memorable sights on television; the killing of 12 US soldiers and dragging of their bodies through the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia in October 1993 and the toppling down of Saddam Hussein’s effigy in Firdos Square in Baghdad after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 drew global attention and remains indelible in our memory.

Not a few watchers of events in Afghanistan were surprised at the turn of events that led to the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan’s political capital back into the hands of the Taliban. The blitzkrieg fashion with which the Taliban seized every important town around the capital was no doubt exacerbated by the actions and inactions of some of the global powers, particularly the US.

Observers would recall that in his remarks on the drawdown plans on 8 July 2021, President Joe Biden was emphatic that the US mission in Afghanistan will conclude on 31 August 2021. On that occasion, Biden stated clearly that ‘we did not go to Afghanistan to nation-build, ….it is the right and responsibility of the Afghan people alone to decide their future and how they want to run their country’.

This statement was obviously not lost on the Taliban as events after that would reveal. By the second week of August, Taliban fighters have surrounded Kabul and claimed key towns of Aybak, Kunduz, Taluqan, Faizabad, Maidan and Jalalabad, the fifth largest city in Afghanistan just about 130 km from the capital Kabul.

Suddenly, all the foreign intervention has come to nought, and truly Afghanistan has been left in the hands of not the legitimate government but the Taliban who have fought for nearly 20 years since it was ousted in 2001. As at now, there is great uncertainty in the country and no one is sure of the future.

One question that keeps begging for answer is, what has been the impact of all the assistance offered to the Afghan government by the US and its NATO Allies for the past two decades? From account, the US and NATO Allies including their partners have trained and equipped over 300,000 current serving members of the Afghan National Security Force, not including hundreds of thousands trained in the past two decades who are no longer serving. Apart from this, the Afghan security forces have had the opportunity of training and operating with the US and its Allies providing them with intelligence and many of their military officers trained in some of the best military institutions in the US and UK.

There is no doubt that the Taliban takeover will have some global implications. Firstly, it will present some human rights problem going by its antecedents while it held sway from 1996-2001. In the past, the Taliban has been known for carrying out public executions of its perceived opponents, denying education to women and persecution of minorities. There is also the issue of Afghanistan becoming a safe haven for extremists and a likely astronomical increase in the growth and trade of illicit and hard drugs. Afghanistan currently stands as the third largest producer of opium in the world. Worst of these fears is the likely domino effect on other extremist groups in Asia, Middle East and Africa and the spill over of weapons through illegal means to countries with extremist networks such as the Al Qaeda, ISIS and ISWAP.

What lessons therefore are there for Nigeria to learn putting into context the activities of ISWAP and the Boko Haram Terrorists in the North East and also the incessant calls for government to seek international assistance in the counter insurgency operations and other threats across the country?

Events in Afghanistan have zoomed home to all Nigerians that as a nation, our destiny is in our own hands. Now and then, Nigerians are quick to call on government to seek international assistance anytime there is a little setback in the military’s campaign. Of course, government has never shied away from seeking assistance but the divergent point remains the extent of such assistance. Since 2015, there has been a renewed synergy among countries around the Lake Chad basin. The Armed Forces of Nigeria has continued to operate with forces from Chad, Niger and Cameroon, all Nigeria’s neighbours along the North East under the Multi National Joint Task Force. Outside the region, it continues to receive assistance from countries such as the US, UK, France and Germany in areas of training, provision of equipment, logistics support and intelligence sharing. The notion of having international forces coming to operate in Nigeria is an illusion that would be inimical to Nigeria’s national security and the events in Afghanistan should discourage it now and in future.

The collapse of the Afghan’s security forces like a pack of card in the face of the advancing Taliban fighters reflects a serious lack of popular support. Many Afghans have always perceived the foreign backed Afghan security forces as appendage of the invading western forces. In spite of the foreign support in training, operational vehicles, equipment, logistics and intelligence assets, the foreign backed Afghan security forces could still not sustain the legitimate government of Ashraf Ghani in place as they do not enjoy the popular support of the people. Securing and gaining local support is a critical success factor in counter insurgency operations such as we have in Nigeria’s North East. This factor underscores the efforts placed by the Armed Forces of Nigeria at winning the hearts and minds of the people. It thus beholds on the populace to reciprocate the efforts of the military by providing useful information to security forces and shun any assistance of any means to insurgents. The act of using the social media to denigrate and disparage the military only serves to emboldened the insurgents. The Armed Forces of Nigeria deserves all the support it could get. It has shown courage and resilience and has never failed in its constitutional role of ensuring the territorial integrity of the country.

Since it fled Kabul in 2001, the Taliban regime’s use of vast mass of ungoverned areas across Afghanistan provided it with the enabling conditions to sustain its military activities. It continued to expand its control such that by July 2021, the Taliban controlled an estimated 54 percent of Afghan districts. The lesson for Nigeria on this is the need for government to spread development and dominate barren and ‘uninhabited areas’ across the country similar to ungoverned areas. Thankfully enough, the military has identified the importance of this given the recent decision of the Nigerian Army to conduct exercises in Falgore Forest, a game reserve located about 150 km from Kano city. Similar uninhabited areas exist in some parts of North West which provides safe haven for bandits. We also have the wide space between Shaki and Nigeria’s border with Republic of Benin running up North through West of Kwara and Niger States, as well as several others within the states which could offer abode for bandits. Leveraging the efforts of the military, government may need to design a comprehensive strategy to integrate all the relevant MDAs responsible for border security and forest/game reserves, the military, police and other security and para military agencies for the sole task of ensuring presence and monitoring of all remote uninhabited spaces across Nigeria.

How Hushpuppi bought Richard Mille wristwatch worn on Instagram —FBI

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has revealed how Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi, acquired a Richard Mille wristwatch which he wore in a picture he shared on Instagram where he’s seen as a celebrity.

Hushpuppi recently pleaded guilty to fraud charges a year after he was arrested in the United Arab Emirates and extradited to the United States of America.

His operations were revealed in an affidavit issued by the United States Attorney’s Office, Central District of California.

The affidavit showed that Hushpuppi and his co-conspirators engaged in Business Email Compromise schemes with which they defrauded a Qatari businessman of more than $1.1m.

The affidavit stated that Hushpuppi used $230,000 gotten from the victim to purchase a Richard Mille wristwatch “which was hand delivered to Abbas in Dubai and subsequently appeared in Hushpuppi’s social media posts.”

According to the affidavit, “After Abbas joined the conspiracy that month, Juma and Abbas received and laundered additional funds in a variety of ways with the assistance of other co-conspirators. Agbabiaka and Fashola were among the co-conspirators who assisted Abbas in receiving and laundering funds.

“Among those payments, Abbas convinced the Victim Businessperson to make wire transfers of $230,000 to a Wells Fargo bank account of a luxury watch-seller and $100,000 to a Capital One bank account of Agbabiaka in late December 2019.

“Abbas used the wire transfer of $230,000 to purchase a luxury Richard Mille RM11-03 watch. Abbas arranged for the watch seller in Florida (the “Florida Watch Seller”) to ship the watch to the New York metropolitan area, where Agbabiaka and Fashola picked it up and ultimately delivered it to a coconspirator, who was a relative of Fashola.

“Abbas then directed that person to transport the watch on a flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport (“JFK”) in New York to the U.A.E., where that person hand-delivered the watch to Abbas on about January 4, 2020. Abbas posted a photograph of himself on Instagram wearing the watch, with the hashtag “#Rm1103,” on January 13, 2020.”

A look at Hushuppi’s Instagram page with 2.5 million followers shows him wearing the wristwatch in a photo posted on January 13, 2020.

“One of the best things I learnt that keeps me going is to “Never take criticism from people I’d never go to for advice” #Gucci #RichardMille #Versace #Rm1103,” he captioned the photo.

Robby

Robby Mukonjere

Robby advised women to walk away when anger takes the better part of them than react and spend their lives behind bars.

A Kenyan woman identified as Robby Mukonjere who was sentenced to five years in jail for brutalizing her husband's side chick has shared her experience while advising women to walk away if both parties can't make it work.

In an interview with Tuko ,Robby said her husband kept lying about taking work trips, and sometimes he would stay in a woman's house for a few days.

Before she met her husband, Robby had a budding career in the hospitality industry despite only going up to the primary school level and dropping due to lack of fees to proceed to high school.

She started out working in a hotel, and slowly due to her service and hospitality. Her then-boss opted to take her back to school and gave her promotions that saw her get to the level of a hotel manager, where she ended up meeting her husband.

She bought her own piece of land and furnished her house. As soon as she met her husband, she sold the land and carried all her house stuff and moved in with him without telling her family members.

The husband had two sons, whom she took in. They were also blessed with a child.

However, trouble began when the husband started lying that he is going on work trips and instead would spend days away from home within their area in some woman's house.

"One day, I found a hotel receipt in his trouser while doing laundry, and he lied and told me he and his colleagues went to sleep at the hotel. But one day, someone came and told me that he and my husband and his other woman were drinking together, so I decided to go to that place," said Robby.

When her husband saw her, he ran away using the back door and left his shoes. But due to her anger, she started beating up that woman and hurt her so badly that she had to be admitted to Kenyatta Hospital.

Later, the police came looking for her, but because her kid was very sick, they left a message that she should go to the station immediately. When she got to the station, she was told that she hurt another woman and that the case was to be handled in Nairobi and because he was living in Western, she had to travel to Nairobi every two weeks for the hearing.

"The lady was badly hurt. I knew I was going to get a life sentence because she was even coming to court in a wheelchair, and her family kept telling me that I will know who they are for messing with their child,'' she added.

Robby was handed a five-year jail term and taken to Langata Women's Prison. Back home, one of her son's was told by her cousins that her mom passed on. But her daughter, who was in Uganda, came home and found the younger brother struggling, so she packed and went to the mom's uncle.

Since she was jailed, the man never visited her or the children at her brother's place. They are, however, planning on visiting him because they were told he is very ill.

While in prison, she found out she was HIV positive and that depressed her. But, she got help from the prison warden.

Robby advised women to walk away when anger takes the better part of them.

The suspected Yahoo boy was arrested after the dead body of his brother was found in his flat.

A suspected internet fraudster has been arrested for allegedly killing his twin brother for ritual purposes in Delta.

The incident, according to reports, happened at Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect was reportedly found with a dog and the decomposing body of his twin brother in their apartment at Old Olomoro Road, Monday, May 24, after neighbours perceived an offensive smell emanating from the flat.

The neighbours broke into the house that had been locked for days. There, they found the suspected Yahoo boy, sitting beside his brother’s decomposing corpse.

Though the reason for the killing could not be ascertained, eyewitnesses opined it might have been carried out for ritual purposes.

A source revealed:

“The house was locked for some days and after some time, the people living in the compound began to perceive foul smell that attracted flies around the apartment.

“The neighbours then alerted the police at the Oleh divisional headquarters. The door was forced open and they found him sitting close to the decomposing body of his twin brother. A dog was also found in the house.”

Over 300 fighters loyal to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) trained in Libya and other countries joined their colleagues in a long battle that led to the final fall of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau on Wednesday.

According to a report by Daily Trust, a fierce battle that lasted several days between the two factions led to the death of dozens of vicious commanders and hundreds of foot soldiers from both sides, with multiple sources saying Shekau has killed himself or fatally injured himself to the extent that he might not survive.

It was gathered that most of the fighters that fought for the defeat of Shekau on Wednesday were aged between 12 and 30.

“They are actually children of some ISWAP members killed over time,” a security source said.

According to him, “Others are youths sourced during raids on multiple islands around the Lake Chad. The ISWAP carefully selected the youths. It was therefore much easier for recruitment as some of the youths willingly joined the group and others were forcefully conscripted.

“Some of them were born during the wartime and others were very young when their parents joined the group around 2002. After their parents died because of illness or confrontation with Nigerian troops, the children naturally took over and when the group split into two in 2016, those that moved on their own or forcefully taken to the shores of Lake Chad under the umbrella of ISWAP had an upper hand in terms of training because they were taken to Libya for training in guerrilla warfare and other purposes.

“Others were sent to Syria and Somalia… They were taken to many countries abroad for training. However, those that came back especially between March and April this year took an active part in confronting Shekau in the last few days. They launched a serious offensive alongside other top commanders and fighters already on ground and they succeeded in taking over,”
 he said.

Another credible source said some of the 300 youths were trained as “medical doctors, paramedics, engineers, IT specialists, bomb specialists and mechanics.”

He added that among them were women “who serve as nurses or cooks while others have gun-handling skills, meaning they can partake in combat operations.”

He said after their return from abroad, they were camped at a village called Shuwaram in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

It had been reported that ISWAP fighters, armed with sophisticated weapons had penetrated the infamous Sambisa Forest from different fronts and surrounded the place Shekau used as a safe sanctuary for years.

They reportedly killed many of his fighters and forced him to surrender.

A signal from security sources indicated that when Shekau discovered that it was the end of the road for him, and ISWAP fighters had directed him to relinquish his position as the grand amir and successor to the founder of the group Mohammed Yusuf, he opted for suicide by detonating the explosives he strapped to his body.

However, the AFP news agency reported that when Shekau reached the point of no return as he was surrounded by ISWAP fighters, he shot himself in the chest, fell on the ground while bleeding profusely but was whisked away to an unknown destination by some of his surviving loyal fighters.

Another source said ahead of the invasion of Sambisa by the factional group, one of the top commanders of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and his lieutenants had visited the shores of the Lake Chad in the company with ISWAP leader Goni Mustafa.

“The entourage were seen on two boats with ISIS flag. Some of those in the entourage were light-skinned people possibly from Libya or Syria. It was only Mustafa that was black. They first visited Marte before they proceeded to Sabon Tumbu.

“They also visited Kirta, Kusuma and Kwallaram where they held meetings with commanders and other fighters,”
the source said.

The source said after the strategy meeting, the visiting terrorists left and from that time, the ISWAP fighters started mobilising ahead of launching attacks on Sambisa Forest.

“Some of them gathered at Kurnuwa, Kayuwa and Tumbin Jaki before they launched the offensive. They had RPGs, GPMGs and AA guns on some vehicles,” he said.

He added that the attackers also moved their “vulnerable women and children” from the Marte area to some locations around Kukawa.

Another source said before they aimed at Sambisa Forest, the ISWAP fighters were responsible for the recent attacks in Damasak, Marte, Mainok, Dikwa and Maiduguri towns in Borno as well as in Geidam in Yobe State.

“They did not target civilians in most of their attacks; rather, they launched attacks against constituted authorities including security forces. The group handpicked and killed people perceived as enemies such as members of a volunteer security group, CJTF.

“On the other side, Shekau and his followers operated from the southern parts of Borno State, mostly around the Mandara Mountains, Sambisa National Park and the Alagarno forest. The group had carried out several deadly attacks on its targets including civilians. Shekau was strict on his followers and did not tolerate rebellious behaviour…He had killed several of his renegade commanders and that was why many of those alive ditched him,”
he said.

Daily Trust also reported that before the ISWAP fighters moved en masse to Sambisa, military operatives had launched several attacks on their hideouts in the northern parts of Borno State while air raids continued unabated.

“The military had sustained onslaught against the group which has its hideouts in the semi-arid landscape with sparse vegetation. Their enclaves are being decimated and with time they will have no hiding place,” he said.

A source said the group allegedly resolved to dislodge Shekau with the intent of relocating to Sambisa and the mountainous areas to evade air attacks by the military jets.

“It was not difficult for the group to locate and launch an attack on the Shekau-led base in Sambisa. There was fierce confrontation before Shekau succumbed and agreed to negotiate with ISWAP commanders. It was during the meeting that an explosion occurred and it was not clear whether or not Shekau was among those killed in the scene,” the source said. He said it was likely that Shekau had survived the offensive and fled to another hideout.

“He had survived several attacks in which he was proclaimed dead,”
he said.

The source said some of the followers of Shekau who were forced to flee the violent confrontation had sought refuge in different locations in the forest and were ready to pay “deep allegiance” to anybody declared as overall leader.

A security situation report trending on social media said Shekau must have been killed during the struggle.

The reports stated that: “On 19th May 2021, about 1829hours, ISWAP top fighter Baana Duguri-on this selector – geolocated around Sambisa Forest, Pulka, Gwoza LGA, BRS, informed ISWAP logistics commander Modu-Sulum- geolocated opposite General Hospital Konduga LGA Borno State that they killed Abubakar Shekau, overall BH leader in Sambisa Forest.

“Duguri disclosed that the ISWAP fighters’ team surrounded the BH leader with his team and shooting ensued between the 2 factions. Duguri further added that Shekau detonated a bomb and killed himself when he observed that the ISWAP fighters wanted to capture him alive.

“Furthermore, Duguri informed Sulum that the two sides also lost some fighters during the shooting…”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian military had reportedly placed all Borno State commands of the Nigerian Army and Air Force on alert.

The NPA, in September 2020, issued a notice announcing that the service operation handled by the Integrated Logistics Services (Intels) Nigeria had been terminated.

Documents obtained by SaharaReporters have revealed that Hadiza Bala, the suspended Nigeria Ports Authority Manager, was involved in a clandestine ploy to shortchange a company in favour of Africa’s richest, Aliko Dangote.

Last year, some coastline terminals, formerly operated by Integrated Logistics Services’ (INTELs) in Onne ports complex, Rivers State, were confiscated and subsequently awarded to Dangote through a proxy company, International Container Terminal Services (ICTS) Nigeria limited.

Onne Port Complex is one of the largest Oil and Gas Free Zone in Africa, where major industry players from the exploration up to the completion phases operate.

The complex has two major terminals: the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) and Federal Lighter Terminal (FLT).

For over a decade, INTELs Nigeria, partly owned by former Vice president, Atiku Abubakar, operated some berths at the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) of the complex, providing logistics services until 2020.

The three berths of FOT numbered 9, 10 and were taken over by the NPA in a controversial manner, which many thought was a move by President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration move to witch-hunt Abubakar, his opponent in the 2019 election and break the company’s monopoly.

The NPA, in September 2020, issued a notice announcing that the service operation handled by the Integrated Logistics Services (Intels) Nigeria had been terminated.

It further states that all Service Boats Owners and Operators are to do transactions directly in each of the Port Complex of the Nigerian Ports Authority.

Meanwhile, a memo released to the press, seen by SaharaReporters, showed that Usman had transferred the berths confiscated from INTELs to ICTSI, a proxy company traced to Dangote, five months earlier.

The leaked memo, dated May 13, was signed by Yusuf Ahmed, NPA’s Director of Lands & Asset Admin, on behalf of Usman.

“Please refer to the lease of land and berths 9, 10 and 11 granted to you at FOT Onne and find attached herewith the draft Lease Agreement for a review of its possible contents before the final copy is produced for execution,” the letter addressed to the managing director of ICTSI read.

Ahmed urged the company to send their comments for consideration.

“A registered surveyor will be appointed to produce the survey plan of the property to incorporation in the Lease Agreement and you will be required to see the surveyors fees,” it further read.

This was not Usman’s first time dealing with Dangote as money transfers between the duo dates back to 2015.

A Nigerian newspaper, Peoples Gazette, had previously reported how Dangote transferred N200 million to a bank account run by Usman during the build-up of the 2015 general election.

The transactions were sent in two tranches from two different bank accounts of Africa’s richest man to Ms Bala Usman’s account with Access Bank, the newspaper reported.

“Ms. Bala Usman received the first N100 million transfer on February 6, 2015, while the second N100 million came through three days later on February 9. The transfers carried ambiguous descriptions that made it difficult to conclude their purpose.”

Ms Bala was recently instructed to step aside for an independent investigation into a series of allegations of impropriety.

Nigeria’s transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, also alleged that the yearly remittance of operating surpluses by the regulatory body from 2016 to 2020 was short of the amount due for actual remittance — a claim, which according to him, should be investigated.

On Thursday, no reason was given for the suspension of Usman, who was reappointed for another five-year tenure recently.

She was first appointed as the Managing Director of NPA in 2016.

According to a release by President’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, President Buhari approved the recommendation of the Ministry of Transportation for the setting up of an Administrative Panel of Inquiry to investigate the Management of NPA.

“The President has also approved that the Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman, to step aside while the investigation is carried out. Mr Mohammed Koko will act in that position. The panel is to be headed by the Director, Maritime Services of the Ministry, while the Deputy Director, Legal of the same ministry, will serve as Secretary. The Minister will appoint other panel members,” Shehu had said in the release.

While details of some of the other allegations against Usman remain unclear, sources said acts of favouritism were part.

Over twelve shallow graves have been uncovered in the compound of Mr. Uduak Akpan, the suspected killer of one Miss Iniubong Umoren, a graduate of philosophy in the guise of offering her a job in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The suspect who is now cooling his feet at the police station in Ikot akpanabia, Uyo was alleged to have lured late Umoren to his place at Nnung Ikono Obio in Uruan Local Government Area of the State, raped, killed, and eventually buried her in a shallow grave in his father’s compound.

The youths of the community enraged with the news stormed the compound, and vandalised the building, using pebbles after setting ablaze the security house of the one storey building.

It was gathered that the vandalization started since on Tuesday night and its still ongoing as at press time even as it was alleged that the youths carted away property in the compound and handed the boy’s father(whom they accused of being an accomplice) to the police.

When some correspondents visited the scene, Wednesday evening, about twelve(12) shallow graves were seen in the large compound and a skeletal bone suspected to be that of a child lying on the floor was also seen. Also old sag bags were seen scattered near the graves as the youths who conducted journalists round the compound claimed that they were used for packing human parts they buried.

The youths said the suspect and his family are strangers living in the community as their real community is Nnung Ikono Ufok in Uruan LGA.

One of the youths identified as Akpan Shadrach James told journalists that the family of the suspect erected the building about four years ago and do not live there permanently but only come occasionally since they have another building in Uyo town and nobody actually knew what they do inside the compound.

“People thought that they were living here, they don’t, they only come and go. They are from the next community. They don’t have friends in this community as their gate is always closed and they wrote the notice, ‘beware of dogs’ on their wall. We didn’t know that such a thing was happening here.

“We want government to investigate this matter and bring justice to that slain orphan. We are grieved with this incident and we don’t want this matter swept under the carpet.”

Also speaking, the youths President of the community, Etubom Sunday Essien said the youths were disappointed over the act, adding that such offence is not condoned in the community.

He said, “there is nothing happening apart from the one you have already heard. It’s not good for the boy to kill his fellow human being. We don’t know that, that is what he has been doing. We, the youths will never allow such things to be happening in our community. That is the reason we took this action.

He, however, exonerated the chairman of the LGA, Mr. Iniobong Ekpenyong saying he played the role of a Chief security officer of council by calling on the police to arrest the culprit.

The Chairman of the local government had earlier issued a press release, distancing himself from insinuations of being party to the incident, stressing that he only did his job as the chief security officer of the local government by fishing out the suspect and handing him over to the police.
